Dans notre série de lettres de journalistes africains, Ismail Einashe examine comment les migrants africains s’entraident sur l’île italienne de Sicile.
Un matin, dans le cœur historique de Palerme, la capitale de la Sicile, un groupe de femmes nigérianes se prépare frénétiquement à ouvrir une banque alimentaire pour les familles migrantes africaines.
Elle est organisée chaque mois par Osas Egbon pour venir en aide à ceux qui ne peuvent se nourrir eux-mêmes en raison de la pandémie de Covid-19.
L’initiative fait partie du travail entrepris par les Femmes de Benin City, un groupe que Mme Egbon a fondé en 2015 avec d’autres femmes victimes de la traite vers l’Italie.
Beaucoup d’entre elles viennent de l’État d’Edo au Nigeria, dont la capitale est Benin City, et ont été forcées de devenir des travailleuses du sexe pour rembourser leurs trafiquants.
Une association caritative locale a permis à la banque alimentaire l’utilisation gratuite de deux petites pièces dans le centre communautaire Spazio Montevergine.
À l’extérieur, un groupe de femmes, essentiellement nigérianes, fait patiemment la queue pour l’ouverture. Il règne une atmosphère de convivialité et d’attente.
Certaines sont arrivées avec des chariots, des sacs à provisions et des poussettes pour faire le plein de provisions.
Pendant qu’elles attendent, certaines jouent avec leur téléphone tandis que d’autres discutent dans un mélange d’italien, d’anglais et d’edo.
Une petite fille de quatre ans entre dans le centre et appelle Mme Egbon “mamma”, tandis que sa mère attend à l’extérieur.
“Je suis la mère de tout le monde”, dit Mme Egbon, qui a 40 ans et vit en Sicile depuis 19 ans.
Les femmes sont ensuite accueillies une par une dans le centre. À l’intérieur, Mme Egbon dirige les opérations aux côtés de ses bénévoles, qui comptent également quelques Italiens.
Ils sont occupés à mettre les derniers éléments dans les colis alimentaires qu’ils ont préparés la veille.
Conseils pour le riz risotto
Mme Egbon explique que chaque mois, la banque alimentaire reçoit jusqu’à 40 familles.
Toutes dépendent de ces colis vitaux, qui comprennent des produits essentiels comme de l’huile, des pâtes, du riz et des conserves comme du bœuf et des tomates.
Les dons dans l’une des salles comprennent également des produits italiens de base tels que le parmesan et le jambon prosciutto.
Mais Mme Egbon concède que ces articles ne sont pas aussi populaires en raison du manque de familiarité avec ces ingrédients.
Les gens ne peuvent pas demander ce qu’ils veulent, mais ils peuvent échanger certains articles contre d’autres s’il y a des choses qu’ils n’utiliseront pas.
À un moment donné, une Nigériane demande ce qu’elle est censée faire avec le riz à risotto qu’on lui a donné.

Le peu de revenus qu’ils ont ne leur permet pas de nourrir correctement leur jeune fille, ils ont donc été obligés de se tourner vers la banque alimentaire.
Aucune sécurité sociale
Mme Egbon, qui dirige également un refuge dans les environs de Palerme pour les femmes qui tentent d’échapper à leurs trafiquants, explique qu’elle a créé la banque alimentaire l’année précédant la pandémie.
Mais la demande s’est accrue depuis, car de nombreuses personnes ont perdu leur emploi et leurs sources de revenus.
En conséquence, les familles sont tombées encore plus bas dans l’extrême pauvreté. Beaucoup sont sans papiers et ne peuvent bénéficier d’aucune aide en Italie.
Environ 33 % des 187 000 étrangers enregistrés en Sicile il y a deux ans étaient originaires d’Afrique, mais des milliers d’autres, non officiels, vivent à Palerme, qui compte environ 1,3 million d’habitants.
La banque alimentaire est gérée sur la base du volontariat et Mme Egbon utilise ses contacts à Palerme avec les églises et les entreprises locales pour collecter ce qu’elle peut et obtenir des faveurs partout où elle le peut.
Toutefois, l’organisation de Mme Egbon bénéficie du soutien de Banco Alimentare, une grande banque alimentaire italienne qui l’aide à se procurer certains articles.
Alors que la matinée touche à sa fin, un don non alimentaire est déposé : une poussette. Mme Egbon me dit qu’elle pense à une famille qui en a besoin.
Lorsque les dernières femmes partent, les volontaires commencent à ranger leurs affaires pour la journée, Mme Egbon étant déjà occupée à discuter avec elles de la manière de s’approvisionner pour la banque alimentaire du mois suivant. La recherche de nourriture commence.
