Ces restrictions sont « inefficaces » et n’ont « aucune justification scientifiques ». Ces fermetures de frontières représentent une forme de « discrimination à l’égard de notre pays », dénonce le président sud-africain. Cyril Ramaphosa est en colère et il le fait savoir à chacun des pays qui se ferment à l’Afrique du Sud. Il n’a pas hésité à les nommer un par un pour mieux les mettre face à leurs responsabilités.« Nous sommes profondément déçus. Nous appelons tous les pays qui restreignent les voyages, à revenir d’urgence sur leurs décisions avant que ces mesures ne provoquent davantage de dégâts à nos économies et aux revenus de nos populations. »
Cyril Ramaphosa demande aux Sud-Africains de ne pas paniquer, rapporte notre correspondant à Johannesburg, Romain Chanson. « Nous devons vivre avec cette pandémie » prévient-il. Le chef de l’Etat rappelle que la solution c’est la vaccination, tout en égratignant au passage, les pays développés. « Au lieu d’interdire les voyages, les pays riches devraient plutôt – sans attendre – soutenir les efforts des pays en développement pour accéder à suffisamment de doses de vaccins et à les produire au bénéfice de leur population. »
Evoquant la hausse régulière ces derniers jours du nombre de nouveaux cas confirmés, notamment dans la région de Johannesburg et Pretoria, il a confirmé que le pays se dirigeait vers une quatrième vague « dans les prochaines semaines, si ce n’est plus tôt ». Mais loin d’être une fatalité, « nous avons un outil puissant, ça s’appelle la vaccination », a rappelé avec force le président. Il a appelé « chacun de ceux qui ne sont pas encore vaccinée, à le faire sans délai » et à motiver les gens de leur entourage à faire de même. « Trop de gens encore expriment des doutes »
Il ne s’agit pas uniquement de se protéger mais aussi « de réduire la pression sur les systèmes et personnels de santé », a-t-il ajouté, affirmant qu’une équipe dédiée au gouvernement planchait sur l’hypothèse d’instaurer « une vaccination obligatoire pour certaines activités et dans certains lieux ». « Ce serait une mesure difficile et complexe » mais si nous n’agissons pas « avec sérieux et une certaine urgence », les Sud-Africains resteront « vulnérables aux nouveaux variants », a-t-il prévenu.
L’OMS s’est joint à l’appel du président sud-africain à laisser les frontières restent ouvertes. « L’Organisation mondiale de la santé se tient aux côtés des pays africains et lance un appel pour que les frontières restent ouvertes », a affirmé dans un communiqué l’organisation, appelant les pays à « adopter une approche scientifique », basée sur « l’évaluation des risques ». Plusieurs pays voisins, également affectés, ont dénoncé ces mesures dans la journée, le président du Malawi allant même jusqu’à les juger « afrophobes ».
