Colossiens 3:20 encourage ainsi les jeunes : « Obéissez en tout à vos parents, car cela plaît au Seigneur. » Même Jésus, quand il était enfant, a obéi volontiers à ses parents (Luc 2:51).
- Les traiter avec respect (Lévitique 19:3 ; Hébreux 12:9). C’est en général la façon dont on parle à ses parents et ce qu’on leur dit qui révèlent si on les respecte. C’est vrai, certains parents agissent parfois d’une telle façon qu’il devient difficile de les respecter. Mais même dans ces circonstances, les enfants peuvent honorer leurs parents en se gardant de leur parler ou de les traiter sans respect (Proverbes 30:17). La Bible dit qu’il est extrêmement grave d’injurier son père ou sa mère (Matthieu 15:4).
- Prendre soin d’eux. Quand nos parents prennent de l’âge, ils peuvent avoir besoin d’une aide pratique. En faisant de notre mieux pour qu’ils aient ce dont ils ont besoin, nous les honorons (1 Timothée 5:4, 8). Par exemple, juste avant de mourir, Jésus a pris des dispositions pour qu’on prenne soin de sa mère (Jean 19:25-27).

Réalité : La Bible enseigne que les liens du mariage passent avant tout autre lien familial. Bien sûr, les couples peuvent tirer profit des conseils de leurs parents et de leurs beaux-parents (Proverbes 23:22). Mais un couple peut décider à bon droit de fixer des limites pour restreindre l’implication de leurs familles dans leur vie de couple (Matthieu 19:6).

Réalité : Même si Dieu a donné aux parents l’autorité au sein de leur famille, toute autorité humaine a des limites : elle ne surpasse jamais celle de Dieu. Par exemple, quand un tribunal a ordonné aux disciples de Jésus de désobéir à Dieu, ils ont répondu : « Nous devons obéir à Dieu plutôt qu’aux hommes » (Actes 5:27-29). De même, les enfants obéissent à leurs parents « en union avec le Seigneur ». En d’autres termes, ils leur obéissent tant que ce qu’ils leur demandent n’est pas en contradiction avec les lois de Dieu (Éphésiens 6:1).
Idée reçue : Si vous honorez vos parents, vous vous devez d’avoir les mêmes croyances religieuses qu’eux.
Réalité : La Bible nous encourage à vérifier si ce qu’on nous a enseigné est bien la vérité (Actes 17:11 ; 1 Jean 4:1). Cela peut amener quelqu’un à adopter une religion différente de celles de ses parents. La Bible parle de certains fidèles serviteurs de Dieu qui n’ont pas suivi la religion de leurs parents, par exemple Abraham, Ruth et l’apôtre Paul (Josué 24:2, 14, 15 ; Ruth 1:15, 16 ; Galates 1:14-16, 22-24).
Idée reçue : Pour honorer vos parents, vous devez participer aux rites traditionnels liés au culte des ancêtres.
Réalité : La Bible dit : « C’est Jéhovah ton Dieu que tu dois adorer, et c’est seulement à lui que tu dois offrir un service sacré » (Luc 4:8). Celui qui rend un culte à ses ancêtres déplaît à Dieu. De plus, la Bible enseigne que « les morts ne savent rien ». Quand on leur rend hommage, ils n’en ont pas conscience et ils ne peuvent ni aider ni faire du mal aux vivants (Ecclésiaste 9:5, 10 ; Isaïe 8:19).
