CE JOUR-LA… 16 janvier, comme aujourd’hui…
Le 16 janvier 2001, assassinat du Président Laurent-Désiré Kabila. Ce jour-là, Laurent-Désiré Kabila travaille dans son bureau, au palais de Marbre, sur les hauteurs de Kinshasa, accordant quelques audiences de “routine”.
Vers 14h, pendant qu’il s’entretient avec son conseiller économique (Monsieur Mota), un jeune soldat de sa garde (le caporal Rachidi) arrive et fait signe de vouloir lui parler. Il se dirige calmement vers Kabila, dégaine son arme et lui tire dessus.
Le chef de l’État s’écroule, atteint au cou et au bas-ventre. C’est alors que Mota se met à hurler pour rameuter la garde. Son chef d’état-major (le colonel Eddy Kapend) et quelques soldats font irruption dans le bureau et découvrent le président allongé par terre, “en plein délire” et se vidant de son sang.
Le caporal Rachidi est aussitôt abattu lorsqu’il tente de s’enfuir. Quelques minutes après, les militaires bouclent le périmètre autour du palais de Marbre et dans une atmosphère de panique générale, font venir un hélicoptère de l’aéroport de Ndjili pour transporter le blessé à la clinique Ngaliema où les médecins lui prodiguent les premiers soins.
Un communiqué lu le soir à la télé soulignera que le président a été blessé, mais bel et bien vivant. Le lendemain du drame, Sakombi Inongo (alors ministre de l’information) admettra que le Président a été évacué au Zimbabwe pour des soins appropriés à la base aérienne de Manyame, située près de l’aéroport de Harare.
C’est seulement le 18 janvier qu’intervient la confirmation officielle, tant attendue, par la voix de Sakombi Inongo toujours :
“Le Congo est en deuil, dira-t-il d’une voix solennelle, et le Gouvernement de salut public a la profonde douleur et le douloureux devoir d’annoncer la mort du président Laurent-Désiré Kabila, ce jeudi 18 janvier à 10 heures. Un deuil national de 30 jours sera observé sur l’ensemble du territoire national”.
