C’était déjà officieux, c’est désormais officiel : le président français, Emmanuel Macron, est candidat à sa propre réélection. Jeudi, par une lettre, il vient d’entrer dans sa campagne électorale, briguant un second mandat à l’Élysée.
Le président Emmanuel Macron a enfin levé le voile en se portant candidat, jeudi 3 mars, à sa réélection, pour laquelle il part largement favori, en pleine guerre sur le continent européen.
Dans une “Lettre aux Français” publiée en ligne par plusieurs médias et destinée à la presse régionale, le président sortant annonce être “candidat pour inventer avec vous, face aux défis du siècle, une réponse française et européenne singulière”.
À 38 jours seulement du premier tour, le désormais président-candidat donne ainsi un coup d’accélérateur à une campagne dont les cartes ont été rebattues par la guerre en Ukraine.
Ce sera aussi l’une des plus courtes jamais concourues par un président sortant, au grand dam de ses adversaires de droite comme de gauche qui n’aspirent qu’à en découdre avec lui sur un bilan qu’ils dénoncent avec véhémence.
Mobilisé par le conflit russo-ukrainien – avec un nouvel entretien jeudi avec son homologue russe, Vladimir Poutine, puis le président ukrainien, Volodymyr Zelensky -, le chef de l’État a attendu presque le dernier moment pour officialiser sa candidature, que les candidats doivent formaliser auprès du Conseil constitutionnel avant vendredi, 18 heures.
Emmanuel Macron se déclare plus tard que deux de ses prédécesseurs candidats à un second mandat, Jacques Chirac en 2002 et Nicolas Sarkozy en 2012, qui s’étaient tous deux déclarés à deux mois du scrutin.
Mais jamais une crise internationale n’a eu un tel impact sur une campagne présidentielle sous la Ve République. Et après les crises des Gilets jaunes, suivie de la pandémie de Covid-19, le plus jeune président que la France ait connu depuis 1958 se positionne comme un capitaine par temps de tempête.
Des adversaires prêts à en découdre
En coulisses, le camp présidentiel s’organise depuis des semaines, entre récolte de fonds pour financer la campagne, tracts, porte-à-porte, création de comités de soutiens et tribunes, dans la presse, d’élus pour un second mandat. Un premier meeting qui était prévu à Marseille ce week-end a été annulé ou simplement reporté.
Et ses adversaires aiguisent leurs armes : avant même l’annonce officielle, le candidat d’extrême droite, Éric Zemmour, a fustigé, sur YouTube, un “quinquennat pour rien” en affirmant que “notre pays est devenu invivable et vous en êtes devenu la cause”. “Les Français vous en veulent”, a-t-il ajouté en prédisant que “le peuple français ne vous laissera pas une seconde chance”.
Le candidat écologiste, Yannick Jadot, a, lui, estimé que “ça fait longtemps qu’Emmanuel Macron est en campagne, qu’il dépense de manière électorale”.
“Son bilan est dur : il a frappé sévèrement le pouvoir d’achat de nos concitoyens”, a renchéri le communiste, Fabien Roussel, espérant que “cette guerre ne sera pas le prétexte pour masquer des attaques sévères contre le pouvoir d’achat des Français”.
Reste que, comme c’est souvent le cas en période d’instabilité, Emmanuel Macron profite de sa stature de “président de crise”.
Depuis le début de l’invasion de l’Ukraine par les troupes russes, il y a huit jours, le président-candidat a gagné plusieurs points dans les intentions de vote, les sondages le donnant à 27-28 %, soit une dizaine de points devant sa rivale d’extrême droite, Marine Le Pen (RN), qui creuse l’écart avec Valérie Pécresse (LR) et Éric Zemmour (Reconquête!).
À gauche, seul le leader de la France insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, tire son épingle du jeu en étant crédité d’environ 11 % des intentions de vote.
Les sondages récents le donnent aussi gagnant au second tour contre tous ses adversaires, y compris la mieux placée, Marine le Pen, même si c’est avec une avance moindre qu’en 2017.
Emmanuel Macron continue de diviser
“Il faut être très prudent sur l’issue de l’élection. Le second tour peut être plus serré que ce qu’on pense. On n’est pas à l’abri d’une démobilisation des nôtres, qui vont penser que c’est gagné”, a souligné à l’AFP une source auprès du parti présidentiel.
S’il sort gagnant au soir du second tour, le 24 avril, il aura réalisé un pari jamais réalisé dans l’Histoire de la Ve République : être réélu au suffrage universel direct sans sortir d’une période de cohabitation, comme l’avaient fait François Mitterrand et Jacques Chirac.
Reste à convaincre. Or, séducteur ou arrogant, protecteur ou distant : cinq ans après son irruption à l’Élysée, Emmanuel Macron continue de diviser les Français, intrigués par son hyperactivité, ses paris risqués et son exercice vertical du pouvoir.
