En Afrique du Sud, l’ancien président Jacob Zuma ne peut plus officiellement se revendiquer de l’ANC. Celui qui a fait une percée lors des dernières élections de mai avec sa nouvelle formation politique uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) a vu son exclusion être confirmée par son ancien parti, vendredi 22 novembre, après le rejet de son appel. C’est un tournant pour l’histoire politique sud-africaine.
Jacob Zuma avait rejoint le parti en 1959 puis intégré sa branche armée, Umkhonto we Sizwe – nom qu’il a d’ailleurs réutilisé pour baptiser sa récente formation politique. En 1963, il est arrêté pour ses activités, et emprisonné 10 ans sur l’île de Robben Island. Et c’est sous la bannière ANC qu’il a été élu deux fois à la tête du pays, une présidence marquée par les affaires de corruption.
Son exclusion n’a donc pas été prise à la légère, mais le parti historique de Nelson Mandela estime d’avoir pas eu d’autre choix. Le soutien apporté à une formation rivale représente « la forme la plus grave d’indiscipline, et une attaque directe envers la mission historique de l’ANC », comme l’a écrit le parti dans un communiqué, ajoutant qu’« aucun individu n’est plus important que notre mouvement. »
Jacob Zuma s’apprête à fêter le premier anniversaire de son organisation, le MK, qui avait fait un score national de 14% aux dernières élections, se plaçant en troisième place. Lui-même n’a pas pu être élu député, en raison d’une précédente condamnation, mais il supervise le parti qui ne cesse de gagner du terrain sur l’autre principale force d’opposition, l’EFF (les Combattants pour la Liberté Économique) de Julius Malema.
