Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza dared to challenge General Paul Kagame for the Rwandan presidency in 2010. Kagame threw Ingabire into prison in 2012, “pardoning” her in 2018.
Ingabire remains closely monitored by the regime and is often harassed and hauled into police headquarters to answer all manner of false allegations.
On December 10, 2021, Ingabire published a must-read essay titled “Intra-Rwandan dialogue is crucial for peace in the Great Lakes.” She argues that since independence in 1962, Rwanda “has experienced successive regimes that have stayed in power by any means possible, refusing to implement good governance reforms.
The repercussions have been massacres and human rights violations, culminating in the Tutsi’s genocide of 1994.”
Rwandans and friends of Rwanda should embrace Ingabire’s message that Rwandans need a dialogue on how to end bad governance that marked all post-independence Rwandan regimes.
