Le rappeur Jay Polly, de son vrai nom Joshua Tuyishimiye, est décédé la nuit dernière. Âgé de 33 ans, l’homme est mort à l’hôpital Muhima de Kigali où il avait été transféré dans un état critique. Aucune explication n’a, pour l’instant, été donnée sur les circonstances de sa mort.
L’annonce de sa disparition provoque une immense émotion au Rwanda, notamment sur les réseaux sociaux. Sur Twitter, les messages affluent : « Rest in peace », « Notre légende a disparu » ou encore « Tu nous as donné de bonnes vibrations à travers ta musique ».
Véritable star du rap, il chantait en kinyarwanda. À son arrivée à 3h du matin dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi à l’hôpital Muhima de Kigali, il était dans un état critique, a déclaré à l’AFP Pascal Nkubito, le directeur de l’hôpital. Les médecins n’ont pas pu le ranimer et il a été déclaré mort une trentaine de minutes plus tard.
Cause de sa mort inconnue
Le rappeur aurait consommé un mélange composé de désinfectant au méthanol, de sucre et d’eau, selon un communiqué des services pénitentiaires. Jay Polly était en détention depuis avril dernier après avoir été arrêté durant une fête interdite où circulaient des produits stupéfiants.
Mercredi, son procès pour usage de stupéfiants avait été fixé au 2 décembre et, lors de cette audience, le rappeur avait demandé à être libéré de prison, plaidant le fait que sa détention provisoire avait expiré. Une demande rejetée par la justice rwandaise.
Cette disparition, dans des circonstances encore indéterminées, fait écho à celle d’un autre musicien : Kizito Mihigo, mort en détention, lui aussi, le 17 février 2020. Il s’était suicidé, selon Kigali qui a toujours rejeté les appels à une enquête indépendante sur les circonstances de la mort du chanteur de gospel.
