Des sites de production de vaccins à ARN messager vont être construits par BioNTech au Sénégal et Rwanda, a annoncé le laboratoire mardi. Ils permettront dans un premier temps de fabriquer 50 millions de doses contre le Covid-19.
Le laboratoire allemand BioNTech a indiqué, mardi 26 octobre, qu’il commencera à la mi-2022 la construction de sites de production de vaccins à ARN messager en Afrique, au Sénégal et au Rwanda.
La société a signé une lettre d’intention avec le gouvernement du Rwanda et l’Institut Pasteur de Dakar, au Sénégal, confirmant un engagement pris fin août entre les parties prenantes lors d’une rencontre à Berlin, selon un communiqué.
La future ligne de production, dont la localisation précise n’est pas communiquée, sera la première étape d’un “nœud central dans un réseau de production décentralisé et robuste en Afrique”, affirme l’entreprise de Mayence (ouest de l’Allemagne).
Cette infrastructure pourra dans un premier temps produire l’ARN messager nécessaire à la fabrication de 50 millions de vaccins contre le Covid-19 par an et il est prévu que la capacité soit portée progressivement à plusieurs centaines de millions de doses de vaccins à ARN messager, “en ajoutant d’autres lignes de production et sites au réseau de fabrication sur le continent”.

“Notre objectif est de développer des vaccins au sein de l’Union africaine (UA) et de développer des capacités de production de vaccins durables afin d’améliorer conjointement les soins médicaux en Afrique“, déclare Ugur Sahin, PDG et cofondateur de BioNTech.
Actuellement, près de 1 % des vaccins utilisés en Afrique sont fabriqués sur le continent. L’Union africaine veut faire grimper cette proportion à 60 % d’ici 2040.
Au lancement de la production, BioNTech fournira le personnel nécessaire mais prévoit ensuite de “transférer les capacités de fabrication et le savoir-faire aux partenaires locaux”.
BioNTech travaille à la fabrication partielle de son vaccin anti-Covid – développé avec Pfizer – en Afrique du Sud l’an prochain. Pour ce projet, la biotech allemande s’est associée au laboratoire Biovac, installé au Cap, pour réaliser l’étape finale de mise en flacon.
