Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta est décédé à son domicile, ce dimanche 16 janvier en début de matinée. Contraint à la démission par un putsch militaire en août 2020, l’ancien chef de l’État s’était depuis mis en retrait de la vie publique.
C’est dans la villa qu’il avait héritée de son père qu’il s’est éteint, ce dimanche 16 janvier en début de matinée, à l’âge de 76 ans. Une villa construite au cœur du quartier de Sébénikoro, à Bamako, réputée pour porter malheur à la fortune de ses occupants. Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK) y était si attaché qu’il avait continué à y résider lorsqu’il était au pouvoir. C’est aussi là qu’il vivait depuis qu’il avait été contraint à la démission par la rue autant que par un putsch militaire, le 18 août 2020, sept ans presque jour pour jour après son accession à la magistrature suprême.
Depuis qu’il avait quitté ses fonctions, IBK ne paraissait plus guère en public. Son état de santé s’était brutalement dégradé quelques semaines après le coup d’État. Il avait été victime d’un AVC et avait dû être hospitalisé dans une clinique de Bamako, avant que le Comité national pour le salut du peuple (CNSP), mis en place par les putschistes, ne l’autorise à aller se faire soigner à Abu Dhabi, aux Émirats arabes unis. Il était ensuite rentré au Mali, ainsi qu’il en avait pris l’engagement, et vivait depuis en retrait de la vie publique aux côtés de son épouse, Aminata – ses deux fils, Bouba et Karim ayant choisi l’exil en Côte d’Ivoire.
Crise cardiaque
En novembre dernier, son état de santé l’avait conduit à retourner à Abu Dhabi, où il était médicalement suivi. Plusieurs sources jointes par Afriquela1ère.com affirment qu’il était soigné pour un cancer, mais que c’est une crise cardiaque qui l’a emporté, ce dimanche.
À en croire les quelques personnes qui avaient été autorisées à lui rendre visite à Sébénikoro, IBK refusait de commenter l’actualité politique de son pays, se disant tout juste préoccupé par l’évolution de la situation. Il paraissait même s’être désintéressé des affaires internes du Rassemblement pour le Mali (RPM), ce parti qu’il avait fondé en 2001, sous la bannière duquel il avait été élu en 2013 puis réélu en 2018 et qui, depuis sa chute, était en perte de vitesse. Lui, l’ancien élève du prestigieux lycée parisien Janson-de-Sailly plus tard formé à la Sorbonne, traducteur de Lucrèce et admirateur de Camus, se disait finalement satisfait de pouvoir se consacrer à son amour des lettres.
Aux ultimes heures de sa vie, restait-il amer de ces mois de contestation et de ce putsch venu mettre fin à une vie dédiée à la politique ? Lui que l’on avait dit déconnecté de la réalité du Mali avait-il finalement compris ce qui avait précipité sa chute ? Lors de ses dernières années au pouvoir, on lui avait reproché son incapacité à mettre fin aux violences des groupes terroristes, mais ses opposants raillaient aussi son népotisme et le dilettantisme de ce noctambule qui aimait se lever tard.
Homme à poigne
C’était oublier que, longtemps, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta avait été considéré comme un homme à poigne. Lorsqu’en 1994 il est nommé Premier ministre par Alpha Oumar Konaré, il n’hésite pas à remettre de l’ordre dans une armée turbulente, à refaire les nœuds des cravates de ses ministres et à rabrouer ceux qui ne maitrisent pas correctement le français, comme l’avait raconté Jeune Afrique lors de son élection, en 2013.
Car cette langue de Molière, de Hugo et de Kundera, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta la maniait aussi bien que le latin. Une élégance qui lui donnait un côté « vieille France » alors même qu’il avait tout autant parcouru les dunes de Gao que les trottoirs du 6ème arrondissement de Paris avant d’accéder au pouvoir. Mais on ne se défait pas d’autant d’années passées en France.

C’est là qu’IBK arrive pour la première fois à l’âge de 13 ans. Là qu’il rencontre certains camarades avec lesquels il partage des convictions et une ambition. Ils s’appellent Alpha Condé, Mahamadou Issoufou, Laurent Gbagbo et militent au sein de la Fédération des étudiants d’Afrique noire en France (Feanf).
Tous deviendront des chefs d’État, mais IBK sera le dernier de la bande à conquérir le pouvoir. La consécration d’années de lutte.
Rentré au Mali à 41 ans au milieu des années 1980, il s’engage en politique, milite contre le régime de Moussa Traoré (« la période la plus palpitante de ma vie », dira-t-il plus tard) et finit par être nommé à la tête du gouvernement. Après six années à la primature, il démissionne en 2000 et se prépare à l’élection présidentielle de 2002. Il échoue, retente sa chance en 2007, nouvel échec. Mais l’homme est têtu.
C’est lors du scrutin organisé après le coup d’État d’Amadou Haya Sanogo, le capitaine qui a renversé Amadou Toumani Touré en 2012, que l’ancien vice-président de l’Internationale socialiste (IS) trouve son heure. Il n’est pas favori, mais devient tout à la fois le candidat de la communauté internationale et d’islamistes rigoureux. Nous sommes en août 2013.
