Plusieurs récits bibliques illustrent de quelle façon une entrevue peut amener la paix. Par exemple, Abigaïl a habilement persuadé David et son armée de ne pas se venger sur sa maisonnée (1 Samuel 25:18-35). Jésus a pris l’exemple d’un roi qui n’avait pas de recours plus sensé que d’envoyer des ambassadeurs solliciter la paix (Luc 14:31, 32). Ainsi, la Bible admet que certaines formes de diplomatie peuvent venir à bout des conflits. Mais alors, pourquoi la plupart des pourparlers de paix ne donnent-ils que peu de résultats ?
La Bible a annoncé avec précision que notre époque serait pénible. Sous l’influence néfaste de Satan le Diable, les hommes seraient “ sans esprit d’entente, […] cruels, sans amour du bien, traîtres, entêtés, gonflés d’orgueil ”. (2 Timothée 3:3, 4 ; Révélation 12:12.) Jésus a par ailleurs prophétisé que l’achèvement du système de choses actuel serait marqué par des ‘ guerres et des nouvelles de guerres ’. (Marc 13:7, 8.) Peut-on nier qu’il y a de plus en plus de guerres ? Faut-il donc s’étonner que, la plupart du temps, les tentatives de paix entre pays échouent ?
Voici un autre élément de réflexion : Si les diplomates font leur possible pour empêcher les affrontements, chacun a pour objectif premier de promouvoir les intérêts de son pays. Il s’agit là du rôle essentiel de la diplomatie. Les chrétiens devraient-ils participer à ce genre d’activités ?
Quels que soient leurs mobiles, les diplomates du monde n’ont ni la capacité ni le pouvoir de forger des solutions définitives.
Les chrétiens et la diplomatie
La Bible conseille : “ Ne placez pas votre confiance dans les nobles, ni dans le fils de l’homme tiré du sol, à qui n’appartient pas le salut. ” (Psaume 146:3). Autrement dit, quels que soient leurs mobiles, les diplomates du monde n’ont ni la capacité ni le pouvoir de forger des solutions définitives.
Lors de sa comparution devant Ponce Pilate, Jésus a déclaré : “ Mon royaume ne fait pas partie de ce monde. Si mon royaume faisait partie de ce monde, mes serviteurs auraient combattu pour que je ne sois pas livré aux Juifs. Mais voilà, mon royaume n’est pas d’ici. ” (Jean 18:36). Il n’est pas rare que la haine nationaliste et l’égoïsme politique sapent les initiatives de paix. C’est pourquoi les vrais chrétiens ne prennent pas part aux conflits de ce monde ou à ses manœuvres diplomatiques.
Faut-il en déduire que les chrétiens se désintéressent de la situation mondiale ? Qu’ils sont insensibles à la souffrance humaine ? Au contraire ! Dans la Bible, les pratiquants du vrai culte sont plutôt des humains qui “ soupirent et qui gémissent ” au sujet des choses mauvaises qui se commettent autour d’eux (Ézékiel 9:4). Mais c’est sur Dieu qu’ils comptent pour établir la paix, conformément à la promesse qu’il a faite. Est-ce que pour vous la paix est synonyme d’absence de guerres ? C’est assurément ce qu’accomplira le Royaume de Dieu (Psaume 46:8, 9). Mais il garantira également la sécurité et le bien-être absolus de tous les habitants de la terre (Mika 4:3, 4 ; Révélation 21:3, 4). Cette paix-là, supérieure, ne peut en aucun cas être obtenue par la diplomatie ni par aucune autre organisation humaine de prétendu maintien de la paix.
Les prophéties bibliques et les événements du passé montrent à l’évidence qu’on est toujours déçu quand on s’en remet à la diplomatie humaine pour obtenir la paix.
