Le samedi 18 juillet 2015, nos confrères du Jambonews a rencontré Monseigneur Léonard, l’Archevêque de Malines-Bruxelles et Primat de Belgique. L’occasion d’échanger sur des thèmes tels que la foi chrétienne, le rôle de l’église dans la société, la question des églises dites de réveil, mais aussi sur Kizito Mihigo, artiste rwandais emprisonné depuis plus d’une année à Kigali et que Monseigneur Léonard a personnellement connu lors du séjour de l’artiste en Belgique.
D’emblée nous entrons dans le vif du sujet par une question relative au constat du recul de la foi ces dernières années, en particulier dans la vie des jeunes en occident.
Mgr Léonard explique ce phénomène par une forme d’ « anesthésie » due au confort dans lequel les populations en Occident vivent, ainsi que « sur une conception un peu surfaite de l’autonomie que nous donnent la science et la technique, qui sont certes des acquis très positifs, mais qui ne suppriment pas les grandes questions existentielles, pourquoi sommes-nous sur cette terre, comment se fait-il qu’il y ait quelque chose et non pas rien ? Comment se fait-il qu’il existe un monde avant nous, sans nous, superbement construit sans que nous y soyons pour rien ? ». Et l’ancien Evêque de Namur estime que c’est sur ces questions qu’il faut repartir pour intéresser les citoyens, en particulier les jeunes « car ce sont des questions que tout le monde se pose, mais que parfois on relègue au second plan , parce qu’on a une vie tellement remplie, tellement confortable».
Sur la question du rôle de l’Eglise dans la société, et notamment celle de savoir si l’Eglise peut jouer un rôle politique, Mgr Léonard estime que cette dernière a un « rôle à jouer dans toutes les questions qui touchent la société, mais jamais en interférant directement dans un processus politique » car « c’est toujours dommageable à terme ». Pour l’Archevêque, c’est par le biais des valeurs auxquelles elle est attachée que l’Eglise peut jouer un rôle étant donné que tous les citoyens sont appelés à participer au débat politique. L’Eglise étant une voix parmi d’autres « elle peut se faire entendre par l’appel qu’elle doit adresser aux consciences. »
« Certaines églises traditionnelles retrouvent une grande vitalité grâce à l’apport de certaines communautés, notamment africaines »
Il explique ensuite le phénomène des églises dites de réveil qui gagnent de plus en plus de fidèles, là où les églises traditionnelles en perdent, par le fait que beaucoup d’églises en Occident se sont « endormies », « ont perdu leur vigilance, leur éveil spirituel ». Ceci ferait que certaines personnes « cherchent ailleurs une vitalité plus grande », mais il estime que certaines églises traditionnelles retrouvent une grande vitalité grâce à l’apport de certaines communautés, notamment africaines.
Ce qui l’inquiète dans certaines églises dites de réveil, même s’il estime certaines très bonnes, est que certaines abusent de la confiance des gens, « on promet le bonheur à court terme, la richesse, la prospérité, la guérison immédiate, dans un climat de surchauffe, un peu artificiel qui joue sur l’émotionnel, le psychologique. »
Au sujet de ses rapports avec les fidèles originaires de la région des Grands lacs, le primat de Belgique évoque des rapports « très positifs (…), très spontanés, très faciles, très encourageants ». « Je me réjouis beaucoup de la participation de tant de frères et sœurs de cette région de l’Afrique, mais aussi de l’Afrique anglophone qui ont une très belle contribution à la vitalité de certaines paroisses en Belgique », nous confie-t-il.
C’est aussi dans ce cadre qu’il a fait la connaissance de Kizito Mihigo. « J’ai vu débarquer un jour à Namur un jeune homme très sympathique qui se demandait s’il ne devait pas devenir prêtre, mais je voyais que son cœur était surtout du côté de l’art, j’ai senti qu’il était fait pour l’art, et lui ai dit, si tu te présentes, éventuellement on t’accueillera mais je pense que ta vocation est ailleurs » se souvient-il. Particulièrement élogieux à chaque fois qu’il évoquera l’artiste rwandais lors de notre entretien, Monseigneur Léonard ajoute « j’admirais la profondeur de sa prière et la beauté de son chant » qu’il trouvait « au meilleur sens du terme envoutant ».

De Kizito Mihigo, il garde le souvenir d’un homme « très simple, profond » qui lui donnait le sentiment d’être « véritablement habité par quelqu’un, par l’esprit saint ». Il décrit le jeune artiste rwandais comme étant un homme « très sincère, idéaliste, peut être parfois naïf qui faisait vite confiance » et il a accepté de soutenir ce dernier dans ses projets car il trouvait « remarquable qu’un homme travaille grâce à son art et sa foi à la réconciliation, à l’unité de tous ses compatriotes »
Sur la question de savoir si la foi chrétienne peut aider les Rwandais à se réconcilier, il répond oui sans hésiter. « C’est même dans le cœur de la foi chrétienne, le Christ a fait tomber le mur de la haine qui séparait juifs et païens qui se détestaient jusque-là » mais, estime-t-il, il faut pour cela que la foi s’enracine très profondément si l’on veut qu’elle soit « un facteur d’unité qui résiste aux tensions ».
C’est ce dernier aspect qu’il a aimé chez Kizito Mihigo, car il trouvait que ce que ce jeune rescapé proposait « venait du très profond de sa foi, il vivait cela à partir d’une source très profonde qui coulait en lui, j’en suis convaincu à partir du Christ ».

Sur sa réaction lorsqu’il a appris l’arrestation de Kizito Mihigo, Monseigneur Léonard évoque « l’incrédulité, la consternation », il s’est dit « il y a comme une erreur sur la personne, je ne peux pas voir en Kizito, un homme qui serait dangereux pour la société, il a peut-être été naïf, il s’est peut être laissé prendre dans quelque chose qui le dépassait» et il évoque « un étonnamment total » car « Kizito tel que je l’ai connu, arrêté emprisonné , ça me paraissait totalement incompréhensible.»
Si Kizito était devant lui, il lui dirait « Mon cher Kizito, ne perds pas l’espérance, ne perds pas le courage. Tu sais en qui tu as mis ta foi, si tu es innocent, la lumière se fera un jour, accroche-toi à ce Seigneur que tu aimes tant, que tu as tant voulu servir par ton art, accroche-toi (…) j’ose espérer avec toi que ce que tu vis maintenant, même si c’est tragique, décourageant, portera un jour des fruits ».
« La violence n’est la vocation d’aucun peuple, mais encore moins d’un peuple comme le peuple rwandais, dans le tempérament duquel il y a cette douceur»
Au sujet des Rwandais en général, Monseigneur Léonard se montre également élogieux à l’égard de ce peuple dont il a découvert la beauté de la langue, il nous raconte être impressionné par sa qualité «de douceur, d’accueil, de discrétion, de respect de l’autre » qualités qu’il illustre par une anecdote « ce qui se passait, lorsque j’étais reçu dans une communauté, dans un village, on commençait par une sorte d’apéritif, en Belgique on commence tout de suite à manger, là, il y avait d’abord des discours, des échanges de paroles, tout un rituel subtil, intelligent, nuancé, respectueux » et il trouve que c’est un peuple fait « pour la paix, l’entente, la douceur » et quand on a dû constater que ce peuple avait été ravagé par la violence, cela lui a paru « une contradiction car la violence n’est la vocation d’aucun peuple, et encore moins d’un peuple comme celui-là, dans le tempérament duquel il y a cette douceur, ce calme ».
Lors de son dernier voyage au Rwanda, il fut frappé par le « dynamisme » qu’il ne retrouvait pas dans d’autres pays, dynamisme qui s’observait notamment le samedi lors du travail communautaire, umuganda, dans le cadre duquel on voit la communauté entretenir la voie publique, enlever les déchets, mais, estime-il, « cette prospérité qui est un grand bien doit se vivre dans la paix et dans la fraternité retrouvée, malgré des différences présentes dans toutes les sociétés ».
En conclusion, Monseigneur Léonard nous livre ses projets futurs lorsqu’il aura tout à fait quitté ses fonctions. « Je compte quitter la Belgique (…) et me retirer dans un petit sanctuaire en France, où il y a du travail, un sanctuaire voué à la miséricorde, à la réconciliation, notamment au sacrement, du pardon. » Il compte y rendre quelques services et dans ses moments libres, continuer à lire pour s’instruire et écrire pour éventuellement aider par ses écrits.
