Pourquoi y a-​t-​il tant de versions, c’est-à-dire de traductions, différentes de la Bible aujourd’hui ? Considérez-​vous les nouvelles versions de la Bible comme une aide ou comme un obstacle à sa compréhension ? Découvrir les origines de ces versions peut vous aider à les évaluer avec sagesse.

Mais pour commencer, découvrons qui a rédigé la Bible, et quand.

LA BIBLE, À L’ORIGINE

La Bible est en principe divisée en deux parties. La première est constituée de 39 livres contenant « les déclarations sacrées de Dieu » (Romains 3:2). Dieu a inspiré des hommes fidèles pour qu’ils rédigent ces livres sur une longue période de temps, environ 1 100 ans, de 1513 à après 443 avant notre ère. Comme ils les ont principalement écrits en hébreu, nous appelons cette partie les Écritures hébraïques ; elles sont aussi connues sous le nom d’Ancien Testament.

La deuxième partie contient 27 livres qui sont aussi « la parole de Dieu » (1 Thessaloniciens 2:13). Dieu a inspiré de fidèles disciples de Jésus Christ pour qu’ils rédigent ces livres sur une période de temps beaucoup plus courte, environ 60 ans, de 41 à 98 de notre ère. Comme ils les ont principalement écrits en grec, nous appelons cette partie les Écritures grecques chrétiennes ; elles sont aussi connues sous le nom de Nouveau Testament.

Ces 66 livres inspirés forment la Bible, le message de Dieu pour l’humanité. Mais pourquoi produire de nouvelles traductions ? Voici trois raisons majeures :

  • Permettre aux personnes de lire la Bible dans leur langue.
  • Rectifier des erreurs faites par les copistes et ainsi rétablir le texte d’origine de la Bible.
  • Moderniser un langage devenu archaïque.

Voyons le rôle que ces facteurs ont joué dans la production de deux des traductions les plus anciennes de la Bible.

 LA SEPTANTE, TRADUCTION EN GREC

Environ 300 ans avant l’époque de Jésus, des érudits juifs ont commencé à traduire les Écritures hébraïques en grec. Cette traduction a été appelée la Septante. Pourquoi a-​t-​elle été réalisée ? Pour aider les nombreux Juifs qui parlaient alors le grec, et non l’hébreu, à rester proches de leurs « écrits sacrés » (2 Timothée 3:15).

La Septante a aussi aidé des millions de non-Juifs, des personnes parlant le grec, à connaître ce que la Bible enseigne. De quelle façon ? « À partir du milieu du Ier siècle, déclare le professeur Wilbert Howard, elle est devenue la Bible de l’Église chrétienne, dont les missionnaires allaient de synagogue en synagogue en prouvant à partir des Écritures que le Messie était Jésus * » (Actes 17:3, 4 ; 20:20). C’est l’une des raisons pour lesquelles de nombreux Juifs se sont rapidement « désintéressés de la Septante * », selon le bibliste Frederick Bruce.

À mesure que les disciples de Jésus recevaient les livres des Écritures grecques chrétiennes, ils les ajoutaient à la Septante, la traduction des Écritures hébraïques, ce qui a donné la Bible complète que nous avons aujourd’hui.

LA VULGATE, TRADUCTION EN LATIN

Environ 300 ans après que la Bible a été achevée, le bibliste Jérôme a produit une traduction de la Bible en latin, qui a plus tard été appelée la Vulgate. Différentes traductions latines existaient déjà. Alors pourquoi une nouvelle version était-​elle nécessaire ? Selon une encyclopédie biblique, Jérôme voulait corriger « les traductions fautives, les erreurs évidentes, ainsi que les ajouts et les omissions injustifiées * ».

Il a corrigé beaucoup de ces erreurs. Mais par la suite, les autorités ecclésiastiques ont causé le plus grand tort qui soit : elles ont décrété que la Vulgate serait la seule traduction approuvée de la Bible et ont conservé cette position pendant des siècles ! Au lieu d’aider les gens du peuple à comprendre la Bible, la Vulgate l’a rendue obscure ; en effet, la plupart des gens ont fini par ne plus connaître le latin.

 LES NOUVELLES TRADUCTIONS SE MULTIPLIENT

Dans l’intervalle, on a continué de produire d’autres traductions de la Bible, comme la célèbre Peshitta, version en syriaque datant du Ve siècle de notre ère. Mais ce n’est qu’à partir du XIVe siècle qu’on a de nouveau entrepris de traduire la Bible dans la langue du peuple.

En Angleterre, à la fin du XIVe siècle, John Wycliffe a été le premier à se libérer des chaînes d’une langue morte en produisant la Bible en anglais, une langue comprise par les gens de son pays. Peu après, le procédé d’impression de Gutenberg a permis aux biblistes de produire et de diffuser à travers l’Europe de nouvelles versions de la Bible en de nombreuses langues vivantes.

Quand les traductions de la Bible en anglais se sont multipliées, leurs détracteurs ont remis en question la nécessité de produire différentes versions dans la même langue. L’ecclésiastique anglais du XVIIIe siècle John Lewis a écrit : « La langue vieillit et devient incompréhensible. C’est pourquoi il est nécessaire de réviser les vieilles traductions pour qu’elles utilisent la langue courante et soient comprises par la génération actuelle *. »

Aujourd’hui comme jamais auparavant, les biblistes sont en mesure de réviser les vieilles traductions. Ils comprennent bien mieux les langues bibliques anciennes et disposent de précieux manuscrits de la Bible découverts récemment. Cela leur permet d’établir plus précisément quel était le texte de la Bible à l’origine.

Il est donc avantageux d’avoir des versions récentes de la Bible. Bien sûr, il faut se méfier de certaines d’entre elles *. Mais si c’est l’amour authentique pour Dieu qui a poussé les réviseurs à produire une nouvelle traduction, alors leur travail nous sera certainement bénéfique.

LE NOM SACRÉ DE DIEU DANS LA BIBLE

La Traduction du monde nouveau utilise le nom sacré de Dieu, Jéhovah, à la fois dans les Écritures hébraïques et dans les Écritures grecques chrétiennes. La plupart des Bibles modernes ne le font pas. En général, elles utilisent à la place « Seigneur ». Une des raisons invoquées, selon certains traducteurs, est que le nom de Dieu, représenté par le Tétragramme (YHWH), n’apparaît jamais dans la Septante, traduction grecque des Écritures hébraïques. Mais est-​ce vrai ?

Au milieu du XXe siècle, des fragments très anciens de la Septante remontant aux jours de Jésus ont été découverts. Ils contiennent le nom sacré de Dieu écrit en caractères hébreux. Il semble donc que c’est plus tard que les copistes ont enlevé le nom de Dieu et l’ont remplacé par Kurios, le mot grec pour « Seigneur ». La Traduction du monde nouveau rétablit le nom de Dieu à sa place légitime dans la Bible.

LA BIBLE A-​T-​ELLE ÉTÉ ALTÉRÉE ?

Les copistes de la Bible ont fait des erreurs, mais aucune n’a altéré la Bible. « Aucune doctrine fondamentale de la foi chrétienne ne repose sur un passage controversé » (F. Kenyon, Our Bible and the Ancient Manuscripts).

Ce sont les copistes juifs qui ont commis le moins d’erreurs. « Les scribes juifs des premiers siècles chrétiens ont copié et recopié le texte de la Bible hébraïque avec la plus grande fidélité » (F. Bruce, Second Thoughts on the Dead Sea Scrolls).

Par exemple, parmi les Rouleaux de la mer Morte, on a découvert un rouleau d’Isaïe de 1 000 ans plus ancien que les textes disponibles jusqu’alors. Que révèle une comparaison entre ce rouleau et le texte actuel ? « Il est très rare qu’un mot soit ajouté ou enlevé » (C. de Hamel, The Book. A History of the Bible).

Des erreurs, comme l’inversion de lettres, de mots ou de phrases, faites par des copistes moins méticuleux sont maintenant mieux repérées et corrigées. « Aucune autre œuvre littéraire antique ne bénéficie d’une telle richesse de preuves textuelles de son authenticité que le Nouveau Testament » (F. Bruce, The Books and the Parchments).
