Le président burundais Évariste Ndayishimiye s’en est pris nommément mardi 31 août au journaliste de RFI Esdras Ndikumana lors d’un discours dans un stade, l’accusant de vouloir « détruire » le Burundi en dévoilant un sombre tableau de la situation du Covid-19 dans le pays. Radio France internationale proteste dans un communiqué ce jeudi 2 septembre contre les « attaques verbales » et ces accusations « infondées et absurdes » portées contre le journaliste, tout comme Reporters sans frontières (RSF).
Par communiqué, RFI proteste contre les attaques portées contre notre confrère Esdras Ndikumana.
RFI a pris connaissance avec stupéfaction des deux attaques verbales successives lancées par le Président du Burundi contre son journaliste Esdras Ndikumana, ancien correspondant à Bujumbura. RFI proteste contre les accusations infondées et absurdes selon lesquelles son collaborateur “rêverait de voir les Burundais mourir du Covid-19” et nourrirait des sentiments hostiles à l’égard du Président du Burundi.
RFI apporte tout son soutien à Esdras Ndikumana, qui avait été violemment agressé physiquement à Bujumbura en août 2015 et qui vit aujourd’hui en exil. Depuis le début de la pandémie de Covid-19, l’ensemble de la rédaction de RFI rend compte de la situation sanitaire au Burundi, comme dans tous les pays du monde, avec professionnalisme et la plus grande objectivité, en se fondant sur des témoignages recoupés et vérifiés.
Dans un autre communiqué, la Société des journalistes de RFI dénonce par ailleurs vivement ces attaques. « La SDJ juge inacceptables ces attaques qui mettent en danger un journaliste soucieux de son travail et décrivant au mieux la situation sanitaire du pays », martèle le communiqué.
À deux reprises, les 19 et 31 août, le chef de l’État s’en est pris verbalement à notre collègue, de façon très violente, en public. Évariste Ndayishimiye reproche à notre journaliste sa couverture de la pandémie. Il s’en est également pris à un deuxième journaliste burundais, Antoine Kaburahe, fondateur du média Iwacu.
L’ONG Reporters sans frontières (RSF) a également condamné des « propos graves et dangereux » du président Évariste Ndayishimiye, élu en juin 2020 après le décès soudain de Pierre Nkurunziza. « Alors que le Burundi fait face à une résurgence de l’épidémie de Covid-19, le président Évariste Ndayishimiye a publiquement pris à partie, par deux fois en moins de deux semaines, le journaliste burundais de RFI Esdras Ndikumana », déplore RSF dans un communiqué publié mercredi 1er septembre.
« Nous condamnons vigoureusement ces propos qui sont graves et extrêmement dangereux. Dire d’un journaliste qu’il fait de la promotion de la pauvreté dans son pays, il a été accusé de déstabilisation, c’est jeter le discrédit sur son travail et menacer tous les journalistes au Burundi. C’est aussi un triste rappel de la fragilité de la liberté de la presse au Burundi », a déclaré sur nos antennes le responsable du bureau Afrique de RSF, Arnaud Froger.
