Je vous salue les amis de Vendredi de gratitude. Vous avez été nombreux à réclamer ce petit moment hebdomadaire de gratitude. Je vous ai compris. Vendredi de gratitude est de retour après un moment de repos pour me ressourcer. Que de gratitude sur mon chemin! Je suis ravie de revenir à ce mot puissant qui nous rassemble tous les vendredis.
Qu’est-ce qui fait que je sois ici à écrire ces mots et que vous, vous pouvez me lire? De mon côté, c’est mon enseignant de l’école primaire qu’on appelait ‘’Muzehe’’ qui m’a appris à lire et à écrire. Et vous, ce sont des milliers de ‘’Muzehes’’ à travers le pays qui ont font de même. Mais eux, qui les a appris à lire et écrire? Autrement dit qui a emmené l’écriture et la lecture dans notre pays et qui nous a donné l’instruction? La première fois que j’ai eu un moment de gratitude intense, c’est quand je lisais un livre et que tout d’un coup j’ai réalisé que si je ne savais pas lire, je n’aurais jamais été au courant du contenu de ce livre.
C’est pour cela qu’aujourd’hui je vais rendre hommage à l’institution qui a emmené l’instruction au Rwanda, l’Église catholique’’. Je sais qu’on lui reproche tant d’autres choses et je suis du nombre.
Depuis l’arrivée des missionnaires, chaque régime a eu son archevêque: Le royaume du Rwanda avait Mgr Classe, Président Kayibanda avait Mgr Perraudin, Président Habyalimana avait Mgr Nsengiyumva et Président Kagame a Mgr Kambanda. Ceci montre que les critiques qu’elle a toujours subies, elle les mérite amplement.
Mais, aujourd’hui je rends hommage à cette institution pour la chose la plus noble qu’elle a fait dans notre vie: introduire l’écriture dans la société rwandaise. Peut-être qu’un jour je le ferai pour ses valeurs chrétiennes, sa raison d’être. Sur ce point, l’échec de l’église est frappant, c’est à elle de s’auto-évaluer objectivement et d’analyser ses méthodes de rependre l’évangile de Jèsus de Nazareth.
Le Rwanda d’avant l’Église catholique (venue janvier 1900) dirigé par les Pères Blancs était analphabète, sans infrastructures scolaires et sanitaires. Nous habitions dans des huttes presque nu ou habillés des peaux de bêtes ou des écorces d’arbres comme la plupart d’autres peuples ailleurs. C’était parfait, ne sachant rien d’autres, nous étions heureux dans notre milieu naturel.
Et les missionnaires arrivèrent avec ce que certains appellent la civilisation, mais que moi j’appelle un mode de vie différent avec certaines connaissances jusque-là inconnues au rwandais. Entre autre l’écriture, la médecine et la religion occidentales. Pour ce qui est de la réligion, le christianisme n’était pas meilleur que notre religion traditionnelle. Ils ont même les similitudes, mais ça c’est une autre histoire. Je me concentre, donc, sur l’apport de l’église en éducation.
Avant l’arrivée des missionnaires aucun Rwandais ne savait ni lire, ni écrire. C’était l’analphabétisme total avec tout ce que comporte ce mot. L’église catholique a éradiqué l’ignorance par l’alphabétisation de la population rwandaise et par une éducation de qualité qui a produit les premiers centres intellectuels au Rwanda, notamment les séminaires et le Groupe scolaire de Butare. Université Nationale du Rwanda, fondé, en 1963, est l’œuvre des hommes de l’Église, les Dominicains. Elle a épaulé le Grand Séminaire de Nyakibanda dans la formation supérieure des Rwandais. Après il y a eu une éclosion des écoles secondaires publiques partout dans le pays, mais dirigées par les communautés religieuses de mouvance catholique. La population instruite du Rwanda est le produit de cette éducation provenant de l’Église catholique.
Ici, nous avons rendu hommage aux personnalités inspirantes. Il était grand temps de rendre hommage, ce qui fut à la base de l’éclosion de ces personnalités, à savoir, l’Église catholique qui les a données de l’instruction. Vivement cette église qui a sorti le Rwanda dans la torpeur de l’analphabétisme. Qui t’éduque pose les bases de ton développement, par conséquent, alphabétiser un individu c’est l’engendrer à ce développement.
