Comme beaucoup de choses impliquant la famille royale britannique, la triste occasion de la mort d’un monarque est régie par des traditions et des conventions.
À la suite du décès de la reine Élisabeth II le 8 septembre, une période de deuil royal a été déclarée, qui doit durer jusqu’à sept jours après ses funérailles.
Voici l’histoire de certaines des traditions utilisées pour marquer le décès du plus ancien monarque britannique, dont beaucoup sont désormais célèbres dans le monde entier.
Drapeaux en berne
L’une des premières façons officielles de marquer la période de deuil est de mettre les drapeaux en berne sur les bâtiments gouvernementaux et ceux associés à la famille royale.
Bien que le terme “berne” soit utilisé, les drapeaux sont en fait hissés aux deux tiers de leur hauteur.
Il s’agit d’une tradition qui remonterait au XVIIe siècle : en mettant le drapeau en berne, on laisse la place à un “drapeau de la mort invisible” symbolique au-dessus du drapeau normal.
Cette pratique a débuté en hommage à la mort d’un capitaine ou d’un officier supérieur sur un navire. Le reste de l’équipage marquait la perte en abaissant le drapeau du navire.
Curieusement, cette règle ne s’applique pas au Royal Standard, un drapeau qui flotte pour symboliser la présence du souverain. Il n’est jamais mis en berne car la monarchie est continue : à la mort de la reine Elizabeth II, le prince Charles, son fils aîné, est automatiquement devenu le roi Charles III.
Les autres drapeaux du Royaume-Uni seront mis en berne jusqu’à 8 heures le lendemain des funérailles nationales de la Reine, la seule exception étant le jour du Conseil d’adhésion, le 10 septembre, lorsque Sa Majesté le Roi a été officiellement proclamé.
Ce jour-là, les drapeaux ont été mis en berne pendant plusieurs heures pour marquer l’événement avant d’être remis en berne.
Salves de canon
Une autre tradition associée au deuil royal est la salve d’armes.
Selon des historiens de l’armée britannique, cette pratique a débuté au 15e siècle, lorsque des navires de guerre visitant des ports étrangers déchargeaient leurs canons en mer pour signifier qu’ils s’approchaient avec des intentions pacifiques, car leurs armes étaient vides.
En 1730, la Royal Navy utilisait déjà les saluts au canon pour marquer certaines occasions, bien qu’ils ne soient devenus obligatoires pour la famille royale et les autres chefs d’État qu’en 1808.
Il existe des règles complexes régissant le nombre de coups, qui dépendent de l’endroit d’où ils sont tirés et de l’occasion.
En 1827, le Board of Ordnance a ordonné que 41 canons constituaient le salut royal correct lorsqu’il était tiré depuis l’un des parcs royaux de Londres ou depuis la Tour de Londres.
Mais à certaines occasions et à certains endroits, ce chiffre est porté à 62 canons.
Des salves de canon ont été tirées à la fois pour pleurer la mort de la reine Elizabeth II et pour marquer l’avènement du roi Charles III.
Le 9 septembre, le lendemain du décès de la reine, une salve royale a été tirée à Hyde Park, à Londres, une salve étant tirée pour chaque année de la vie de l’ancienne monarque, âgée de 96 ans.
Sons de cloches
Les églises, chapelles et cathédrales de l’Église d’Angleterre ont fait sonner leurs cloches le lendemain du décès de la reine Elizabeth II.
Le décès de la souveraine est l’une des rares occasions où des cloches entièrement étouffées sont sonnées – une technique permettant de créer un écho en installant des tampons des deux côtés du battant de la cloche.
Mais les cloches ont ensuite été sonnées sans sourdine pour célébrer le nouveau roi.
En Angleterre, on pense que cette pratique remonte au moins au VIIe siècle, puisqu’elle est mentionnée dans les écrits du moine le Vénérable Bede à propos de la mort de Hilda de Whitby, qui vivait à cette époque.
Une tradition propre à la famille royale est la sonnerie de la cloche de Sébastopol au château de Windsor.
Pendant la guerre de Crimée, en 1856, la cloche a été arrachée aux Russes et transportée de l’église des Douze Apôtres de Sébastopol au palais royal.
Le lendemain de la mort de la reine, elle a sonné une fois pour chaque année de sa vie, une tradition accordée uniquement aux membres éminents de la famille royale.
La dernière fois qu’il a sonné, c’était pour commémorer le décès de la mère de la reine en 2002.
Avis au palais de Buckingham
Un bulletin court – sur papier placé dans un petit cadre en bois foncé – est utilisé pour informer le public des principaux événements royaux tels que les naissances et les décès au palais de Buckingham.
Pour les naissances, le cadre est placé sur un chevalet doré orné sur le parvis du palais, à l’intérieur des grilles, mais pour les décès, il est généralement fixé à l’extérieur des grilles en fer.
Les décès de George VI, en 1952, et de George V, en 1936, ont également été annoncés de cette manière.
