The Russian opponent and number one opponent of the Kremlin, Alexei Navalny (47), died on Friday in the Arctic prison where he was serving a 19-year sentence, the prison service (FSIN) announced. Investigators themselves told a lawyer for Navalny that the cause of his death has still not been established. Navalny’s family accuse the Russian state of “lying” to keep his body, which have not yet been found.

“On February 16, 2024, in Prison No. 3, prisoner A. Navalny felt unwell after a walk and almost immediately lost consciousness. Medical staff from the facility arrived immediately and an emergency rescue team was called. All necessary resuscitation measures were taken, without results. The emergency doctors have confirmed the death of the convict, the causes of death are being established.”

Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, visited the IK-3 penal colony in the Arctic region of Yamal on Saturday and was given an “official document” confirming the death, Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said in a message on X. “His death occurred on February 16 at 2:17 p.m. local time [12:17 p.m. Paris time] according to the official document given to Alexei’s mother,” she added.

His body is not in the morgue, it remains hidden by the authorities

“It’s obvious that the killers want to cover their tracks. That’s why they don’t hand over Alexei’s body and even hide it from his mother,” Navalny’s team wrote on Telegram.

A lawyer for Alexei Navalny who went to see the investigators “has been informed (…) that a new histological examination has been performed,” Kira Yarmysh wrote, on X. “The results should be known next week. It’s obvious that they are lying and doing everything they can to avoid having to hand over the body,” she added.

His mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, said she saw her son on February 12 in his penal colony and that he was “in good health and in a happy mood.”
