General Paul Kagame is evidently not America’s favourite strongman anymore. Senior officials of President Joe Biden’s Administration can’t seem to resist characterizing Kagame’s regime in unflattering terms.
Without naming Kagame and his regime by name, US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken has condemned African regimes “exploiting social grievances to gain and maintain power, arresting opposition figures, cracking down on the media, and allowing security services to enforce pandemic restrictions with brutality.”
This is a perfect description of Kagame’s dictatorship.
USAID Administrator Samantha Power was more direct about Kagame’s regime: “I don’t think that there is an environment on the ground that allows criticism, or that there’s pluralistic party development or the criteria that you would have in any textbook for a liberal democracy.”
Kagame’s American honeymoon of the Clinton-Bush-Obama years is over.
