Always at the weekly appointment of our Friday’s gratitude, I present to you Father Modeste Mungwarareba.He was born on May 8, 1951 in the former prefecture of Butare and was ordained a priest in 1976.He was Rector of the Minor Seminary of Butare and in 1996 he became Secretary of the Episcopal Conference of Rwanda.
He was the much appreciated head of the Service d’animation théologique (SAT) of Butare, an organization founded in 1990 by his fellow traveler, Dr. Laurien Ntezimana.The SAT was a place of formation for the laity, focused on reconciliation, which, during the genocide of 1994, lost 38 of its 72 animators.
Abbé Modeste was able to escape the massacre. He joined Dr. Laurien in 1992 after the latter lost one of his collaborators.After the genocide against the Tutsis in 1994, the social fabric was completely destroyed.The existence of the SAT took on more meaning than ever and its mission responded well to the climate of Rwanda after the genocide of 1994.At the end of that same year, the SAT resumed its pastoral work, both psychological and social as well as spiritual, to promote reconciliation and form “nuclei generating peace” in Rwanda.
Abbé Modeste gave himself heart and soul to this mission.Thanks to their commitment to reconciliation, he received with Dr. Laurien on November 25, 1998 in Louvain-la-Neuve, the International Peace Prize from the hands of the president of Pax Christi International, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels.
A man of peace recognized by all for his commitment to reconciliation, he is the inspiration for the “Detmold Confession”, named after the German locality where this text was signed in December 1997 by Rwandan Christians of different ethnicities and Churches, anxious to engage in the construction of a Rwanda where it would be good to live for all. A priest in the true sense of the term service to God, Father Modeste preached love not only of his neighbor, but also of “his enemy.”
However, he had no illusions because he knew how difficult this was to achieve in post-genocide Rwanda.In the 1996 Lenten campaign, invited to Switzerland with Dr. Laurien Ntezimana, he recognized how “love of enemies is very difficult to live!». However, he had testified that non-violence was possible, even in a torn country, “where conviviality has really been broken because of the genocide.” In a context still very marked by fear, despair and doubt about the possibilities of overcoming violence, the work consists, abbé Modeste said, in “putting individuals back on their feet, in putting together the individuals we have put back on their feet, in putting to work the individuals we have put together. »
Abbé Modeste died very young at the age of 48, on a Monday, May 6, 1999, of natural death at the Butare Hospital.
The curse of losing another monument in infancy struck Rwanda with the death of Abbot Modeste Mungwarareba.A nameless sadness for all those who knew him.The French-speaking Secretary of the Action de Carême – an organization that finances the work of the SAT – Charles Ridoré, paid tribute to the memory of Abbé Modeste who had greatly impressed the Swiss public with his message of reconciliation and his work in promoting dialogue between the two Rwandan communities.
As for Dr. Laurien, the death of Abbé Modeste represented for him the enormous loss of a long-time collaborator and a faithful friend.Thus, on January 2, 2000, he founded the Association Modeste et Innocent – AMI in abbreated form – a non-profit association in honor of his two companions, Abbé Modeste who died in 1999 and Innocent Samusoni, a father killed on April 30, 1994 during the genocide against the Tutsis. Both had witnessed ubuntu in the difficult context of pre-genocideS.
To all those who lived in Butare, the death of Abbé Modeste was felt as a shock.Butare was in mourning.
