General Paul Kagame has found a new career – meet the headmaster of the new breed of West African rulers. Unwanted in his own Great Lakes Region, Kagame would rather mentor the new generation of rulers of West Africa.
Kagame’s mentoring duties are allowing him to avoid engaging with fellow heads of state in his own region on ending wars, most of which were fueled by him.
For example, on February 22, 2022, the signatories of the Regional Oversight Mechanism, which is the main oversight body under the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the region, met in Kinshasa, DRC.
The signatory heads of state attending the Kinshasa Summit included the presidents of Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Kagame was nowhere to be seen.
Kagame was in West Africa visiting General Mohamed Ghazouani, the ruler of Mauritania.
Since then, Kagame has been performing his new headmaster role with passion – West African rulers roll in and out of Rwanda almost on a weekly basis.
On March 18, 2022, Kagame hosted General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, the new Chadian ruler who grabbed power after his father was killed at the war front in 2021.
A week earlier on March 10, 2022, Kagame received the special envoy from the Benin ruler Patrice Talon, three days after hosting the ruler of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo on March 7, 2022.
