The double-domed sapphire crystal protecting the dial also serves as a callback to the acrylic hesalite crystal frequently found on ’70s-era chronographs. This piece has a profile measuring 13.1mm, but much of that is due to the domed profile of the crystal itself, so this piece actually feels a touch smaller and streamlined than that number may suggest. All told, the watch is an exercise in pushing the limits of a saturation diving-focused model the Grand Seiko way; it isn’t meant to wear like a Sub, or a SKX007 for that matter. I’m not certain that this watch was ever meant to be a commercial success, and that’s also why I’m so drawn to it. The size and materials are congruent with the role the SBGH255 is meant to play.
While yearly releases like this can get a little tired, IWC did away with that notion by introducing this pretty spectacular-looking blue ceramic case – as if we weren’t already pleasantly blown away by the Mojave ceramic models.

In terms of overall form, the watch is not entirely surprising from past iterations – maintaining link the balance wheel and arched bridge beneath the pronounced domed crystal. The black lacquer dials against the blued hands do give this watch a particular industrial vibe that prior iterations did not possess. In fact, the Final Edition, released about four years ago, had more of a luxe, haute-horology feeling.
