With the watch on the wrist, the first thing you will notice is that it wears tall with a proud profile that seems, at first, to belie the otherwise vintage feel of this modernly-produced watch. Thankfully, the 39mm width and 45mm lug-to-lug ensure that the watch doesn’t feel large or hard to wear. Actually, after just a few minutes on wrist, the Vostok proved to be comfortable and nicely proportioned for day-to-day wear.
“People think of them like family members,” said Sebastian Laws, owner of Sutton Clocks on the Upper East Side of New York City, when I called to ask about the historical anthropomorphizing of the grandfather clock. “They’re big and imposing and they’re always on; they have to be on in order to work.” They require commitment, and engagement.
On wrist, the Series 8 GMT is anything but short on presence. The brutalist case design is accented by the deep taper of the steel bracelet (from 22.8mm at the widest link to 18mm at the clasp) and link the array of colors and textures on and around the dial. The overall look and feel of the case is close to the Chronomaster Sport, with a similar crown, pump pushers, caseband, and lug combination, but without the visual and tactile heft of the ceramic bezel.

Gosling went on to say how he felt it was important for the watch to remain a constant for his character, despite other variables in his life changing. “There’s like nine action set pieces in this movie, multiple different identities that are wildly different from each other,” Gosling says. “I’m in this kind of heightened red suit, then I go into this sort of tracksuit in the middle of the film, but the watch stays the same.”
