I am focused on small independent manufactures and independent watchmakers. The strap too is a natural rubber design with vents a pair of keepers and a tang buckle. Victorinox offers additional strap options but I have to give the nod to the rubber as it’s a very nice option that matches the watch nicely without being overly bulky a common problem with FKM straps these days. Comfort is good and as a note to folks out there with watches that have 21mm lugs Victorinox does plan to sell these separately and makes a handful of options for the 21mm sizing.

Aesthetically this comes as a link huge relief. My eyes found the original chronograph-style pushers a bit oversized and overbearing. But, then again, they did match the aesthetic of the 1930’s-style pilot watches Patek was trying to evoke, even if that style seemed pretty far out of line for the rest of the brand’s catalog. Something about a more traditional case layout and the inclusion of the chronograph feels like what the watch should have been all along.
The leather strap it’s delivered on is indeed substantial and channels the WWII look and feel, but I think the watch would be equally as handsome on a modern NATO or canvas strap in drab green or khaki. The case shape and dial aesthetic call out for a modern version of a Bonklip bracelet, and that’s something that works with very few watches of today.
Omega is touting the 41mm variant as the men’s watch and the 38mm as a ladies watch, but I have a sneaking suspicion a good number of men will opt for the smaller size especially since this feels decidedly more dressy link in its overall aesthetic.
Mayer is a serious AP guy – and he’s got a wide array of traditional,slim Royal Oaks (including this amazing monochrome early perpetual calendar seen in his recent GQ shoot). This slim, gold-on-gold tourbillon is among his favorites, and if you see him around LA, there is a good chance this will be what he’s wearing.
