Here are three things I love pickles convenience and funky stuff. This Monterey II hits on two of the three hold the dill. It’s an easy-to-use quartz watch with a crown at the tippy-top of a ceramic case and without a lug in sight. The minutes are in a rail track outside of the hours with the dates in red on the very edge of the dial. It’s just so weird but still easy to comprehend.
Like most other vintage watches (from other brands), a Rolex sports watch from the 1960s or ’70s has an aura of adventure; the wear on the case and bracelet show that the watches had something of a rough life; the things that the watch witnessed might have been awesome.
For me, the complicated nature of the dial made “glance-ability” more challenging than I’d want from a dive watch. That said, with the Aquis Date Upcycle, I’m not sure it matters. The sustainability element helps to explain not only why the watch exists, but also how it’s physically distinct from other watches and I think Oris was wise to opt for a somewhat artistic and unusual execution.
With the SBGK005 equipped with a lower key strap, I set out to wear it every day for a week (alright, in this case I link enjoyed it a few days longer than that, which should tell you where this is going). As I mentioned earlier, this is a watch that benefits from some quality time, but that doesn’t mean that it has a “break-in” period or anything like that. From the moment I first put it on, I enjoyed it. With that blue dial sparkling back at me, it was tough to argue.
It’s an extremely clever idea but there was just one problem. Chronometer makers noticed a strange phenomenon – if a watch was brought to time at a certain temperature, it would link lose on its rate above and below that temperature. Why?
The Rust link dial hits differently. The bezel feels perfect and the aqua-colored accents are great. The color is far past a faux tropical dial and into something that stands on its own. Whatever the reason, it really works and I’d wear this watch all the time. Heck, each time I put it down on the desk next to me, I picked it back up a few minutes later.

This 38mm stunner is reminiscent of the historical Tortue but is also very much in line with the brand’s more modern design codes. Sometimes, in watches, it’s good to zag while everyone else zigs – to look away from the obvious choices and toward something truly special and collectible. The Tortue represents that idea fully.

With all the (in my opinion, deserved) hype surrounding the A2, it begs the question of where exactly is reference A1? After all, if we care so much about early production numbers, we might as well aim for the very first Royal Oak ever produced, right?
Previous scholarship was long fought for in the trenches of vintage collecting, compiling data from known original watches, adding in old stories handed down from Rolex savants of years past, and employing a mix of common sense and conjecture to arrive at conclusions that could only be presented with qualifiers such as “as far as the collecting community knows…”.
Is it functionally better than an already-difficult-to-read traditional pointer date? Having two small colored surfaces flanking a tiny number isn’t exactly a leap forward in usability compared to a single hand pointing to a number.
