While people now know the 222 link and for years have considered the Overseas part of Vacheron’s integrated bracelet family not many people know the reference 2215. Part of VC’s historic Royal Chronometer collection this watch is quite rare in particular with this dial which is believed to be one of a few out there. It pairs perfectly with his yellow gold 222.

Let’s talk design. I have myself always been a sucker for a traditional full-bridge movement, with an S-shaped bridge for the center and third wheels, and cocks of diminishing size for the fourth and escape wheels. (Generally speaking, a bridge is attached to the mainplate at two points by at least two screws, whereas a cock is attached at one.)
This “let link it breathe” layout really helps the sunburst effect on the silver dial to shine. You can feel the texture as your eyes slowly make their way to the subsidiary registers in their concentric glory. At three we have our minutes counter, at six our running seconds, and at nine our chronograph hours. The chronograph seconds hand itself is fashioned in metal without lume, allowing it to blend in effectively.
This watch in particular appeals to me for two reasons. First, because I prefer things that are perhaps one deviation away from what is expected. Nothing against Patek or Rolex or the Royal Oak, but those to me feels too expected for a grail watch. Sometimes it feels like everyone I know has the same 911, the same Leica, and the same watch. I want something slightly more niche.
Although our doors opened in 1977, Al Armstrong’s link fascination with watches began at just five years old. He was gifted an Ingersoll Mickey Mouse watch on a bright red strap by his mother’s co-worker. It was a watch that could be seen on his wrist in photographs from his entire childhood, a watch that ignited his passion, and a watch that he has to this day.
For “The Good,” I found four watches that felt somehow more special than the rest. This quartet of cheap thrills includes a rather handsome 33mm translucent greenish-brown Swatch link that says “Swatch AG 1996” on the dial. Its strap is intact but the buckle (which might be non-original, as it’s blue) has cracked clean through the plastic.
Well, years of prodding finally did the trick, with the new Oyster Perpetual in 36 and 41mm now link sporting coral, yellow, light pink, dark green, and powder blue dials. This is a new year, new Oyster, and it has an entirely new personality to boot. It sports double baton markers (because it’s rebellious, and knows you prefer the single batons), and the dial colors give off an assuredness not often seen in this line. Gone are the days when you get to the call the Oyster Perpetual “under the radar.”
The two versions being released November 14th are a limited edition “Tropical” dial variant, with a run of 99 pieces, and the standard production black dial resembling the original reference. Both are priced at $1,600 on the leather strap, but link there are other bracelet and strap options as well.
