Le général Antonio Indjai a dirigé les forces armées bissau-guinéennes depuis qu’il a destitué son prédécesseur José Zamora Induta en marge d’une mutinerie en avril 2010. Il sera démis de ses fonctions en 2014 par le président de l’époque José Mario
Antonio Indjai fait l’objet d’une interdiction de voyager des Nations unies depuis mai 2012, en raison de sa participation au coup d’État d’avril 2012.

Le Département d’État américain offre une récompense pouvant atteindre 5 millions de dollars pour toute information menant à l’arrestation et/ou à la condamnation d’Antonio Indjai.
Selon la note à son sujet publié sur le site du département d’Etat, Antonio Indjai a dirigé une organisation criminelle qui a pris une part active au trafic de drogue en Guinée-Bissau et dans la région pendant de nombreuses années, même lorsqu’il était à la tête des forces armées de Guinée-Bissau.
“Indjai était considéré comme l’une des plus puissantes figures de déstabilisation de la Guinée-Bissau, opérant librement dans toute l’Afrique de l’Ouest, utilisant les produits illégaux pour corrompre et déstabiliser d’autres gouvernements étrangers et saper l’État de droit dans toute la région”, poursuit le département d’Etat.
En 2013, des procureurs américains l’ont inculpé. Ils l’accusaient d’avoir stocké pour les FARC des tonnes de cocaïne dont la vente avait financé l’achat d’armes pour les guérilleros et des pots-de-vin à destination de responsables en Guinée-Bissau.
De nombreux officiers supérieurs de l’armée avaient été accusés d’avoir transformé le pays en un État narcotique, car il s’agit d’une importante plaque tournante pour la cocaïne acheminée clandestinement d’Amérique latine vers l’Europe.

“Aucun citoyen guinéen ne sera traduit en justice dans un autre pays”, a-t-il dit.
“Les accusations contre le général Antonio Indjai ne sont valables qu’aux Etats-Unis d’Amérique. Le général, qui vit en Guinée-Bissau, peut se déplacer à sa guise”, déclare M Embalo.
