Les stars namibiennes de l’athlétisme Christine Mboma et Beatrice Masilingi – toutes deux âgées de 18 ans – ont réalisé cette année quatre des cinq meilleurs temps du monde au 400 m féminin.
Elles étaient en bonne voie pour décrocher des médailles olympiques, mais leur ascension fulgurante s’est brusquement arrêtée.
Elles ont été interdites de participation à l’épreuve du 400 m féminin aux Jeux de Tokyo. La raison : leur taux de testostérone naturel est trop élevé.
Les deux adolescentes participaient à des compétitions internationales quand elles ont appris la nouvelle.
Christine Mboma était avec l’entraîneur du duo, Henk Botha, en route vers leur camp d’entraînement en Italie. À l’atterrissage de l’avion, Botha a reçu un appel du Comité olympique namibien lui annonçant la nouvelle. Le temps qu’il puisse appeler Beatrice Masilingi, son autre athlète, celle-ci l’avait déjà appris par les réseaux sociaux.
La révélation a été un choc pour les deux athlètes. Ni l’une ni l’autre n’avaient été testées auparavant, et elles n’avaient aucune raison de penser que leurs taux d’hormones ne se situaient pas dans la fourchette normale.
Ce n’est pas la première fois que des coureuses sont confrontées à ce problème.
En 2018, Caster Semenya a été interdite de compétition après que World Athletics a statué que “pour garantir une compétition équitable, les femmes ayant un taux de testostérone naturel élevé doivent prendre des médicaments pour le réduire afin de participer à des courses de demi-fond”.
Mais demander à quelqu’un de prendre des médicaments pour modifier quelque chose dans un corps dont il est satisfait est controversé.

La testostérone joue un rôle moteur dans la fabrication de nouveaux globules rouges, et plus une personne a de globules rouges, plus elle peut transporter d’oxygène vers ses muscles, ce qui lui permet de courir plus vite et plus longtemps.
Les hommes ont généralement des taux de testostérone plus élevés que les femmes, ce qui est l’une des raisons pour lesquelles, en moyenne, ils sont plus performants que les femmes dans les compétitions sportives.
Et si les gens prennent de la testostérone pour améliorer leurs performances, ils obtiennent généralement de meilleurs résultats, explique le Dr Richard Holt, professeur de diabète et d’endocrinologie à la faculté de médecine de l’université de Southampton.
La recherche montre cependant que si l’on prend un groupe d’athlètes masculins d’élite, tous avec des niveaux de testostérone différents, ceux qui ont des niveaux plus élevés de cette hormone ne sont pas nécessairement plus performants que ceux qui ont des niveaux plus faiblesse. Dr Holt affirme qu’il en va de même pour les athlètes féminines d’élite, ce qui explique pourquoi la testostérone ne peut pas tout expliquer en matière de performances sportives.
“Il existe un certain nombre de polymorphismes génétiques, c’est-à-dire de légères modifications des gènes, qui déterminent si une personne possède cette capacité innée à concourir au niveau de l’élite”, explique-t-il.
Le problème, cependant, est de savoir où tracer la limite entre un avantage lié à la testostérone et d’autres avantages naturels, génétiques.
Joanna Harper, l’auteur de Sporting Gender, avance l’argument suivant : “Si vous devez choisir un avantage pour séparer les deux catégories [féminine et masculine], vous devez choisir un avantage qu’un groupe a et que l’autre n’a pas. Mais pour ces deux adolescentes, une décision juridique sur leur féminité est très personnelle.
“Nous venons tous de régions différentes et sommes élevés différemment. C’est tout simplement différent. Nous sommes tous créés différemment, avec des objectifs différents. Vous ne pouvez donc pas me comparer à quelqu’un d’autre. C’est vraiment injuste”, déclare Masilingi
Pour l’instant, les jeunes femmes n’ont pas l’intention d’intenter une action en justice contre World Athletics, mais elles se battront pour leur droit à la course.
“Nous ne nous tairons pas”, conclut Masilingi. “Je dirai que le système de soutien est très fort en ce moment.
