Les autorités belges ont identifié de nouvelles victimes du logiciel espion, dont les téléphones ont été infectés il y a un an. Le service de renseignement militaire considère qu’il est «très probable» qu’elles l’aient été par le Rwanda.
Le service général du renseignement et de la sécurité (SGRS), le principal service de renseignement militaire belge, a découvert de « très probables » traces d’infections par le logiciel espion Pegasus sur les téléphones d’un journaliste belge et de sa femme, révèlent ce vendredi 17 septembre les médias belges Knack et Le Soir.
Mi-juillet, un consortium de seize médias, dont Le Monde, avait publié une série de révélations sur l’utilisation massive de Pegasus pour espionner des élus, journalistes, avocats ou défenseurs des droits de l’homme dans de nombreux pays, dont la France et la Belgique.
Le Rwanda soupçonné
Durant l’été, les renseignements militaires belges ont approché plusieurs personnes identifiées comme de possibles cibles, et ont analysé leurs téléphones. Ceux utilisés par Peter Verlinden, ancien reporter à la radio-télévision publique néerlandophone VRT, aujourd’hui journaliste indépendant et spécialiste de l’Afrique, et de sa femme Marie Bamutese, présentaient des traces de Pegasus.
Une analyse menée par le Security Lab d’Amnesty International a confirmé que les deux téléphones avaient été infectés par le logiciel espion en septembre 2020, vraisemblablement via une faille de sécurité touchant à l’époque le système iMessage d’Apple – qui permettait aux clients de NSO, le développeur de Pegasus, d’infecter un téléphone à distance, sans action de la part de la personne visée, de manière totalement imperceptible.
« Je ne suis pas quelqu’un de facilement paranoïaque, mais cela vous donne la sensation de perdre une part de soi-même, que vous ne contrôlez plus ce que vous faites. Cela donne un sentiment d’insécurité, que nous avions déjà à cause des problèmes que nous avons eus avec des trolls rwandais sur les réseaux sociaux, mais là c’est vraiment pire que ça » a réagi Peter Verlinden, interrogé par le média Knack.
NSO n’a pas souhaité commenter en détail ces révélations, l’entreprise israélienne estimant que d’après les « informations minimales » dont elle disposait, ces infections ne semblaient « pas liées à NSO Group ni à une de ses technologies. »
Le SGRS estime qu’il est « très probable » que ces deux téléphones aient été visés par un service de renseignement rwandais – le pays fait partie des clients de NSO Group. Marie Bamutese, d’origine rwandaise, a écrit et coécrit avec son mari de nombreux articles sur le génocide rwandais, ainsi qu’une autobiographie. « C’est le moment pour le gouvernement belge de prendre des positions fortes et non seulement de condamner publiquement ce genre de techniques mais aussi de prendre des sanctions », a souhaité M. Verlinden lors de son entretien avec Knack, déplorant que des « citoyens belges » puissent « ne pas se sentir en sécurité dans leur propre pays, dans leur propre maison, à cause d’un régime qui, à 6 000 kilomètres de là, essaie de les réduire au silence ».
