Bello Abdul Hakeem Bolaji est l’une des millions de personnes à travers l’Afrique qui ont grandi avec le paludisme.

Ce Nigérian de 25 ans estime que la décision historique de vacciner les enfants de la majeure partie du continent est un ” changement de vie “.

La maladie est désormais sous contrôle dans la plupart des continents, sauf en Afrique, où plus de 260 000 enfants en sont morts en 2019.

“C’est une nouvelle qui change la donne”, déclare Bello, qui travaille dans l’intelligence artificielle.

“Quand je l’ai entendu pour la première fois, c’était tellement excitant. La technologie définit le monde moderne et des solutions comme les vaccins ont déjà sauvé le monde de la polio, de la rougeole et même du Covid-19.”

Le paludisme est un parasite propagé par les moustiques, qui tue principalement les bébés et les enfants en bas âge.

La mise au point d’un vaccin après 100 ans d’efforts est considérée comme l’une des plus grandes réussites de la médecine.

Bello a dû s’occuper de sa jeune sœur lorsqu’elle a attrapé le paludisme à l’âge de 12 ans. Atteinte de drépanocytose, une maladie qui affecte les globules rouges, elle a eu beaucoup de mal.

“Mes parents étaient à l’étranger et j’étais le seul, et j’avais environ 17 ou 18 ans”, raconte-t-il.

“C’était au milieu de la nuit, elle a commencé à pleurer, à vomir, sa température était élevée et elle ne pouvait même pas me voir”, témoigne-t-il.

“Il se passait tellement de choses, j’avais très peur, j’ai commencé à crier pour que les voisins m’aident”, raconte-t-il.

“Je me suis précipité à l’hôpital et ils l’ont mise sous oxygène, sous perfusion et ont fait des tests”, poursuit-il.

Bello dit qu’il fait partie des chanceux car sa famille a pu payer l’argent nécessaire pour commencer le traitement – mais beaucoup d’autres n’ont pas les moyens.

Bello dit que beaucoup de ses amis et camarades de classe sont morts du paludisme – certains n’avaient que cinq ans.

“Je dirais que c’est traumatisant de regarder en arrière maintenant et de penser à tous les gens avec qui j’ai grandi, les cousins et la famille élargie, les camarades de classe et les amis”,ajoute-t-il

“Ce sont des gens que nous aimons et avec qui nous voulons passer du temps, mais dont la vie est écourtée par la menace d’une maladie”, regrette-t-il.

“Ce sont des personnes qui auraient pu devenir de grands médecins, de grands ingénieurs et scientifiques, de grands innovateurs, de grands leaders qui auraient pu forger ou changer notre environnement ou notre communauté”, souligne Bello.

“Mais ils n’ont jamais eu cette chance”, admet-il.

‘Il y a deux issues : la mort ou la pauvreté’

M. Bello explique que pour de nombreuses familles qui vivent en dessous du seuil de pauvreté, il n’est tout simplement pas possible de se payer un traitement hospitalier.

“Ce qui est difficile, c’est que tant de familles ne peuvent pas se permettre d’attraper le paludisme, elles ne peuvent pas payer les factures d’hôpital, la nourriture ou l’oxygène. Dans de nombreux cas, ces enfants finissent par mourir”, dit-il.

“Le paludisme a deux conséquences : la mort ou la pauvreté. Alors que la plupart des familles devraient dépenser de l’argent pour soutenir les entreprises ou les frais de scolarité de leurs enfants, elles en dépensent pour traiter le paludisme”, explique-t-il.

C’est pourquoi, pour Bello, le vaccin va changer la donne.

“Tant d’enfants avec lesquels j’ai grandi n’avaient pas les moyens de payer les frais de scolarité, ou d’acheter des uniformes et, dans certains cas, ne pouvaient pas se permettre de manger parce que la plupart de l’argent est dépensé à l’hôpital”.

“Au bout du compte, cela conduit beaucoup d’entre eux à abandonner l’école et à se lancer dans une vie de criminalité ou de travail mal payé.”

“Je ne sais pas comment exprimer mon excitation”, déclare Ndifanji Namacha, un médecin basé au Malawi.

“Depuis notre plus jeune âge, nous pensions que le paludisme n’était pas évitable. Vous grandissez et vous entendez vos camarades de classe qui ne peuvent pas venir à l’école parce qu’ils sont malades.

Ndifanji traite à la fois le paludisme et fait campagne pour une plus grande sensibilisation dans le pays.

“L’Afrique perd une grande partie de ses finances à cause du paludisme”, dit-elle.

“L’argent qu’ils dépensaient pour aller à l’hôpital, ils peuvent maintenant l’utiliser pour leur propre développement.”

Le nouveau vaccin est mis au point par la société pharmaceutique britannique GlaxoSmithKline, et son efficacité est démontrée pour la première fois il y a six ans.

“En étant formé dans un hôpital du Malawi, surtout pendant la saison du paludisme, vous voyez des mères arriver avec des enfants convulsés à cause d’un paludisme grave”, explique Ndifanji

“Vous voyez des femmes enceintes qui souffrent, même des fausses couches qui résultent du paludisme, des bébés de faible poids à la naissance à cause du paludisme. On s’y habitue en quelque sorte.”

Bien que l’utilisation du vaccin soit approuvée, Ndifanji ne va pas cesser de faire campagne auprès de son gouvernement.

“Nous avons besoin que ce vaccin soit accessible à tous, et ce n’est que lorsque nous pourrons parler de l’adoption du vaccin et des réactions des gens à son égard.”
