L’assassinat du premier dont le second est accusé, avec d’autres, est au cœur d’un procès qui s’est ouvert ce lundi à Ouagadougou. Les lignes qui suivent ne parleront pas de la fin tragique du révolutionnaire et tonitruant Capitaine Sankara, modèle des jeunes africains, encore moins des péripéties ayant abouti au procès, mais elles retracent l’histoire de ses liens avec Blaise Compaoré, son successeur à la tête du Burkina Faso.
Leurs deux noms marqueront à jamais l’histoire du Burkina Faso.
Inséparables frères d’armes à la fin des années 1970, Thomas Sankara et Blaise Compaoré ont ensemble mis un terme à la présidence de Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo avec Henri Zongo et Jean-Baptiste Boukary Lingani avec le coup d’Etat de 1983.
Auparavant, Sankara, alors Premier ministre, avait été arrêté, avec Lingani. Un soulèvement populaire le libérera.
Ensuite, ils ont tous deux dirigé leur pays mais connaissent des fins de règne différents.
Mais si la présidence de Thomas Sankara, qui a remplacé Ouédraogo en 1983, a pris fin avec sa mort le 15 octobre 1987 dans des circonstances non encore élucidées, Blaise Compaoré a été chassé par un soulèvement populaire le 31 octobre 2014, après 27 ans au pouvoir.
L’ancien président burkinabé, aujourd’hui âgé de 70 ans, vit en exil en Côte d’Ivoire, un pays dont il détient la nationalité depuis 2015.
Un voyage dans le temps permet de comprendre les liens qui les unissaient.
Comment se sont-ils connus?
Mariam Sankara, veuve de Thomas Sankara, affirme dans un entretien avec Caroline Loyer de BBC Infos que son mari et l’ancien président Compaoré se sont connus dans l’armée.
“Quand j’ai connu mon mari, ils se connaissaient déjà. Ils se sont rencontrés dans le cadre militaire. Ils étaient très proches. C’était son meilleur ami. C’était la personne qui pouvait venir à n’importe quel moment chez nous”, témoigne-t-elle.
Le journaliste malgache Sennen Andriamirado, fournit des détails plus précis dans son livre Sankara le rebelle (1987), une biographie consacrée au leader révolutionnaire burkinabè, quelques mois avant sa mort tragique.
Le journaliste avait rencontré les têtes de file de la révolution burkinabè à l’époque.
“La rencontre entre Thomas Sankara et Blaise Compaoré se produira au Maroc, lors d’un stage au Centre des parachutistes de Rabat, de janvier à mai 1978”, écrit le journaliste.
“De-là date notre amitié, précise Blaise. On ne se quittait pas. C’est à cette époque que nous avons pris l’habitude de manger ensemble tous les jours”, écrit le journaliste citant Blaise Compaoré.
Plus loin dans le livre, le journaliste malgache, décédé en 1997, raconte que Thomas et Blaise ne se séparent plus après leur première rencontre au Royaume chérifien.
“Seuls instructeurs voltaïques, on les retrouve à partir de juin 1978 au Centre national d’entrainement des commandos ( CNEC) à Pô, à 147 kilomètres au sud de Ouagadougou. Sankara en est le commandant depuis 1976, Compaoré devient son adjoint” écrit-il.
Serge Théophile Balima, ancien conseiller en communication de Capitaine Thomas Sankara, confirme à BBC Afrique que les deux étaient extrêmement proches avant et durant les deux premières années de la révolution.
“Les deux hommes étaient plus que des frères, tellement proches qu’on croirait qu’ils étaient liés par le sang. Leur amitié s’est vraiment consolidée au fil du temps. Les deux étaient épris d’admiration l’un pour l’autre et on les trouvait tout à fait inséparables”, déclare l’ancien conseiller en communication de Thomas Sankara
Il ajoute “qu’ils avaient deux tempéraments qui se complétaient de façon formidable : Sankara était exubérant, assez volubile alors que Compaoré était beaucoup plus discret, beaucoup plus réservé dans l’expression”.
“Blaise fils adoptif des Sankara”
M. Balima, par ailleurs professeur des universités en journalisme, sciences de l’information et de la communication à l’Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo, révèle que Thomas Sankara et Blaise Compaoré étaient tellement proches “que les parents de Thomas Sankara préféraient Blaise à leur propre fils et ils le disaient à qui voulaient l’entendre parce que Compaoré était à leurs yeux le bon fils, le meilleur fils”.
La radio BBC a tenté de recueillir le témoignage d’autres membres de la famille Sankara mais vu l’imminence du procès ceux-ci ont préféré nous renvoyer à de précédentes interventions publiques.https://bbc.com/ws/av-embeds/cps/afrique/region-58868542/p09y9wzg/frLégende vidéo,
” Il aurait pu comme beaucoup, président ou pas président, jouir de la vie … “.
“La consigne est de ne pas parler aux médias en ce moment”, dit une sœur du défunt capitaine à la BBC.
Dans le film du journaliste sénégalais Barka Ba commémorant le 28ème anniversaire du décès de Thomas Sankara, Odile Sankara, sœur de Thomas, raconte: “Blaise était le fils adoptif de mes parents”.
“Mon père Joseph et ma maman Marguerite considéraient Blaise comme leur propre fils”, raconte Odile Sankara, soeur du Capitaine.
Paulette Sankara, autre sœur de l’ancien président, déclare dans la même production : “dans cette cour, Thomas, aîné des garçons, ne prenait pas les décisions mais c’était Blaise qui prenait les décisions ici. C’était un membre à part entière de la famille “.
Dans son livre le journaliste malgache, ancien rédacteur en chef de Jeune Afrique, confirme aussi que Blaise Compaoré “en plus d’être l’ami intime de Thomas était bien l’enfant d’adoption de la famille Sankara”.
“Chaque 15 octobre quand la presse venait, Papa disait “j’avais deux fils, l’un n’est plus (Sankara) et l’autre est là (Blaise), je veux qu’il traverse cette porte et me dise ce qui s’est passé”, raconte Odile Sankara, petite sœur du défunt Capitaine. Elle ajoute : “Papa a attendu des explications venant de Blaise jusqu’à sa mort en vain”.
Pour sa part, Mariam Sankara révèle à BBC Infos que Blaise Compaoré ne lui jamais présenté de condoléances ou exprimé des regrets.
“La famille a essayé d’avoir le corps et de faire une messe au début. Mes beaux parents étaient là. On l’a jamais reçu. Ils sont décédés avec ce chagrin-là”, se désole Mariam Sankara.
Blaise Compaoré a abordé une seule fois publiquement les détails entourant la mort de Thomas Sankara dans un entretien paru dans Jeune Afrique le 4 novembre 1987, moins d’un mois après les faits.
Il se défend d’être le commanditaire de l’assassinat.
“J’aurai pu avoir sa mort sur la conscience si j’avais ordonné de l’abattre. Or ce n’est pas le cas. C’est pour avoir voulu nous liquider Jean-Baptiste Lingani, Henri Zongo et moi qu’il s’est fait abattre par des soldats qui me sont fidèles”, dit Compaoré.
Dans le même entretien, il raconte sa réaction à la découverte de la scène de crime.
“Lorsque je suis arrivé au Conseil de l’entente après la fusillade et que j’ai vu le corps de Thomas à terre. J’ai failli avoir une réaction violente contre ses auteurs. Cela aurait sans doute été un carnage dont je ne serais pas sorti vivant. Mais quand les soldats m’ont fourni les détails de l’affaire, j’ai été découragé, dégouté . Ils avaient des preuves qu’un complot contre mes camarades et moi-même se préparait pour 20 heures. Je suis resté prostré pendant 24h”.
Quatorze personnes, dont Compaoré, sont actuellement jugées à Ouagadougou pour complicité ou implication présumée dans le meurtre de Sankara, il y a 24 ans.
Divergences idéologiques profondes
“L’origine de leur brouille c’est la politique. Le problème est apparu quand ils étaient au pouvoir ensemble. J’ai toujours pensé qu’ils avaient les mêmes idées mais il y a eu une différence de vision à un moment donné“, explique la veuve de Thomas Sankara.
Germaine Pitroipa, amie de Sankara et militante révolutionnaire burkinabè, interrogée par BBC Afrique, abonde dans le même sens : ils dormaient sur la même natte mais n’avaient pas les mêmes rêves.
L’ancienne Haut-commissaire du Kouritenga de 1984 à 1986 affirme que “Thomas Sankara rêvait avec passion pour le peuple burkinabè alors que Blaise n’avait pas les mêmes ambitions”.
“Thomas connaissait la profondeur du peuple burkinabé et il avait l’âme du peuple. Blaise n’était pas un révolutionnaire. La première fois que j’ai vu Blaise j’ai dit à Valère Somé (ancien ministre et ami de Sankara) que celui-là ne pouvait pas être révolutionnaire parce qu’il portait une Rolex en 1982. On ne nait pas révolutionnaire on le devient mais le comportement de Blaise ne présageait pas qu’il pouvait devenir révolutionnaire. Mais Sankara nous assurait qu’il pouvait répondre de lui”, raconte-t-elle à la BBC.
Serge Théophile Balima, ancien conseiller en communication du capitaine Thomas Sankara et dernière personne à l’avoir vu avant son assassinat dans l’enceinte du Conseil de l’Entente affirme à BBC Afrique qu’ après les deux premières années de la révolution, les divergences ont commencé à se faire jour.
Sur bien des points, note-t-il, il y avait des contradictions manifestes entre les deux amis.
“Sur le plan idéologique et politique, les deux conceptions n’étaient plus les mêmes. Thomas Sankara était plutôt assez doctrinaire, intransigeant sur les questions idéologiques alors que Blaise Compaoré, peut-être par réalisme, par realpolitik, était plus conciliant, plus axé vers le compromis“, explique M. Balima.
Sur le plan social, analyse-t-il, Thomas Sankara était plutôt axé sur la remise en cause de l’ordre établi à tel point que la chefferie coutumière, ce qu’on appelle les chefs traditionnels, les hiérarchies religieuses, il avait tendance à les remettre en cause et à les qualifier de parasitaires.
“Au contraire, Blaise Compaoré était chargé de dialoguer avec ces forces dites féodales et religieuses, il était beaucoup plus conciliant“, déclare Pr Balima.
Issiaka Kindo, représentant du parti de Blaise Compaoré à Abidjan, contacté par la BBC, préfère ne pas aborder la question des relations entre les deux hommes.
Comme lui, plusieurs responsables politiques burkinabè proche de Blaise Compaoré, contactés par BBC Afrique sur cette question ont décliné.

“La pensée de Sankara doit être enseignée dans les écoles d’Afrique”
“Nous avons essayé de l’épauler au maximum mais son entourage l’a beaucoup influencé. Nous aurions pu concilier nos positions sur l’avenir du pays mais c’est le débat qui a manqué : ou plutôt le refus du débat a conduit au dénouement dramatique que nous avons connu. Thomas a incarné, à un moment de sa vie, l’espoir de notre peuple. Par manque de modestie il n’a pas su combler cet espoir », déclarait M. Compaoré quelques semaines après le décès de son ami et frère d’arme.
Les politiques de gauche radicale de Sankara ont été critiquées par les organisations de défense des droits de l’homme qui les ont qualifiées de draconiennes, nous rapporte Lalla Sy de la BBC qui est à Ouagadougou pour les besoins du procès.
Son style de leadership a même été remis en question par certains membres de son propre gouvernement.
“Je crois qu’on peut lui reprocher justement de n’avoir pas épousé assez vite le pluralisme démocratique. Et il a voulu confier le pouvoir au peuple en réalité et il a confié effectivement le pouvoir à des gens qui venaient vraiment du lumpen prolétariat, qui géraient ce qu’on appelait les comités de défense de la révolution et dans les faits, certains se sont retrouvés en train de commettre des exactions dans les quartiers, dans les villages et tout ça aussi a contribué à discréditer son pouvoir“, explique Serge Théophile Balima.
Pourtant, l’influence de Thomas Sankara sur le continent était considérable. Il était perçu comme un champion du panafricanisme et s’opposait à la dépendance à l’aide étrangère.
