Le président lituanien Gitanas Nauseda a déclaré vendredi à Bruxelles que de telles mesures étaient “des plus nécessaires à court terme pour gérer cette crise”.

Les ministres de l’Intérieur de 12 pays (Autriche, Bulgarie, Chypre, Danemark, Estonie, Grèce, Hongrie, Lituanie, Lettonie, Pologne, République tchèque et Slovaquie) avaient écrit le 7 octobre à la Commission pour demander à l’UE de financer la construction de telles clôtures.
“Une barrière physique apparaît comme une mesure de protection des frontières efficace, qui sert les intérêts de l’ensemble de l’UE, pas seulement les États membres en première ligne”, faisaient-ils valoir.
La commissaire aux Affaires intérieures, Ylva Johansson, avait alors répondu que les pays avaient “la possibilité et le droit de construire des clôtures”. “Mais quant à savoir si on devrait utiliser les fonds européens, qui sont limités, pour financer la construction de clôtures à la place d’autres choses tout aussi importantes, c’est une autre question”, s’était-elle contentée d’indiquer.
La Pologne a, comme la Lituanie, commencé à construire une clôture de barbelés sur une partie de sa frontière avec la Biélorussie.
La Hongrie avait quant à elle érigé ce type de barrière à la frontière avec la Serbie et la Croatie (pays membre de l’UE mais qui n’est pas dans l’espace Schengen) lors de la crise migratoire de 2015.
La Slovénie a fait de même avec la Croatie.
