Ce trajet est extrêmement dangereux : au moins 1 236 personnes ont déjà péri cette année en tentant cette traversée, contre 858 sur la même période en 2020, selon Flavio Di Giacomo de l’Organisation des migrations internationales (OMI) de l’ONU.
L’opération de secours du Geo Barents a « probablement permis d’éviter d’autres victimes », a-t-il tweeté, soulignant « le besoin de renforcer les patrouilles en mer ». Selon MSF, le Geo Barents transporte actuellement 186 personnes, dont des femmes et des enfants, le plus jeune étant âgé de 10 mois. L’ONG a demandé un port sûr pour pouvoir les débarquer.
