La première personne mise à l’honneur lors de ce premier Vendredi de gratitude de l’année 2022 est le légendaire chanteur Jean-Baptiste Byumvuhore. Homme très humble, il pourrait ne pas approuver cet honneur. Mais je ne m’excuse pas, car il ne s’appartient pas, il appartient à tous ses fans qui l’aiment et qui adoreraient lui rendre hommage. Mais je vais m’excuser un tout petit peu quand même! Désolé, Mr. Byumvuhore, je n’en pouvais plus, j’ai résisté longtemps, vous le méritez amplement.
Jean-Baptiste Byumvuhore est né en 1964 dans l’ancienne préfecture de Kibuye. À l’âge de 4 ans, il entra à Gatagara chez l’Abbé Joseph Fraipont Ndagijimana. Il fait une partie de son école primaire à Gatagara, et l’autre (les 4ième et 5ième années) à Kigali à Gatagara CHK. Il termine sa 6ième année primaire à Gatagara de Nyanza. Il continue ses études secondaires au Groupe scolaire de Butare dans la section de Secrétariat et de Comptabilité. Après ses études, il travaille à Gatagara et puis à Kigali au Ministère de la Santé.
Mr. Byumvuhore est devenu une légende en vertu de sa musique. Il sortit son premier album à l’âge de 24 ans en 1988. Ses chansons ont toujours eu un sens qu’il s’agisse d’un enseignement, une inspiration, un hommage, un ras-le bol, une consolation, une dénonciation, un appel, un rappel… Les années passent et il ne change pas. Son pays entre en ébullition en 1994, tout s’écroule autour de lui. Quel gâchis!
Les gens n’ont rien compris du message porté par ses chansons. Il ne perd pas espoir dans l’humain, il recommence encore et encore. Il défie même son père. Il l’a appelé ‘’Byumvuhore’’ ce qui veut dire ‘’écoute et tais-toi’’. Désolé, Père, face aux stupidités de ce monde, oui, je vais me taire, mais face à l’injustice, je m’appelle ‘’Byumvuvuge’’, écoutes et dénonces!
Après le génocide contre les Tutsis, il est meurtri de voir son Rwanda sombré dans la douleur et la rage. C’est normal dans de telles circonstances cruelles. Mais au fur et à mesure que les années passent, il réalisa que le Rwanda ne veut pas panser ses plaies. Au contraire, il veut les laisser saigner en y ajoutant du piment forts (histoires inventées ou exagérées) pour garder la plaie béante. Il se rappelle de son ami Kizito qui s’est battu pour la justice jusqu’à en mourir, et il n’en peut plus. Un grand homme, symbole de sagesse et d’humanité, Mr. Jean-Baptiste Byumvuhore consacre sa musique au combat contre l’injustice.
Qu’est-ce qu’il n’a pas chanté? Chacun y va de sa préférence. Pour moi, c’est ‘’Demokarasi irahenda’’, un chef-d’œuvre qui montre le cercle vicieux de la violence au Rwanda de génération en génération et comment, à chaque changement de pouvoir, nous nous accrochons à l’espoir d’une paix qui ne vient jamais. C’est un homme de grande valeur qu’on n’a pas toujours su apprécier à sa juste valeur. Mais nous l’avons encore parmi nous en chair et en os. Il est imbibé de cette valeur qu’on appelle ‘’ubupfura’’ qui n’existe plus dans notre culture. Mr. Byumvuhore est la définition même d’ubupfura. Je n’exagère pas, je décris l’homme tel qu’il est. Sa grandeur d’âme ne change pas malgré les aléas de la vie. Ceux qui le connaissent ne tarissent pas d’éloges pour lui.
Comme ce grand philosophe de l’antiquité, il paraît qu’il se demande toujours si ce qu’il va dire est juste et utile. Après avoir discuté avec lui, tu te demandes si cet homme existe réellement dans notre Rwanda d’aujourd’hui. En plus de toutes ces qualités, la cerise sur le gâteau, c’est son sens de l’humour. Cet humour doux, rassurant et intelligent qui te prend au dépourvu et te fait rire aux éclats jusqu’aux larmes, alors que lui reste d’un calme olympien.
Je pourrais écrire un livre sur cet homme au grand coeur, mais pour le moment, aidez-moi à rendre hommage à notre Byumvuhore national qui a bercé notre enfance jusqu’à aujourd’hui avec ses magnifiques chansons. C’est le plus grand chanteur du Rwanda du 20ème siècle.
Depuis son plus jeune âge jusqu’à maintenant, son courage, son charisme, sa sagesse et son sens de l’humour ont pu émouvoir tous les Rwandais. Il est parmi les rares hommes de valeurs toujours en vie. C’est une chance inouïe, préservons-le, car il constitue un trésor précieux.
C’est un grand homme, un symbole de sagesse et d’humanité. Merci Jean-Baptiste Byumvuhore pour cette leçon de vie et pour ton combat pour la justice si bien mené à travers tes chansons. Si on comprenait nous aussi, comme tu l’as compris il y a longtemps, que la bonté est essentielle en notre Rwanda plus qu’autre chose, on se porterait bien mieux.
Mais tu es encore là pour nous le rappeler, heureusement pour nous. Que Dieu te bénisse!
