Il ajoute que certains des auteurs de l’attaque avaient été arrêtés.
Sur un autre compte Facebook vérifié, le président a posté une photo de lui-même assis à côté d’un homme en treillis militaire, avec pour légende “Le calme est revenu en Guinée-Bissau !”.
Que s’est-il passé ?
Des coups de feu ont été signalés autour du palais présidentiel mardi après-midi. Le président et le premier ministre auraient participé à une réunion de cabinet à l’intérieur du bâtiment.
Un témoin en Guinée-Bissau avait déclaré à BBC Focus on Africa que les militaires et les policiers se sont rendus sur les lieux où les hommes armés tiraient, à la suite de quoi un policier a été abattu.
Les écoles et les bureaux ont été fermés, et l’armée a été déployée dans les bâtiments gouvernementaux.
La fusillade entre des assaillants non identifiés et des officiers, alors que des rapports font état d’une tentative de coup d’État, a laissé les gens “très inquiets de la situation qui prévaut”, déclare un journaliste local à la BBC.
“C’était la panique – tout le monde essayait de se réfugier dans un endroit sûr. En 1998, pendant la guerre civile, 2 500 personnes ont été tuées dans des affrontements entre le général [Ansumane] Mané et le président – et les gens ont peur qu’un tel événement se reproduise”, a déclaré Alfred Dabo.
Les événements de mardi en Guinée-Bissau surviennent dans une atmosphère de “discorde” provoquée par le remaniement ministériel du président la semaine dernière, a ajouté le journaliste.
La Guinée-Bissau a une longue histoire d’instabilité politique et de coups d’État militaires, dont le dernier remonte à 2012.
Le président Umaro Sissoco Embaló, lui-même ancien premier ministre, a été élu au sommet en 2020 après avoir remporté un second tour de scrutin contre un autre ex-premier ministre.
M. Embalo a déclaré vouloir résoudre les tensions politiques dans ce pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest, qui a connu neuf coups ou tentatives de coup d’État depuis 1974. Il a également promis de moderniser l’une des nations les plus pauvres du monde, qui compte quelque 1,6 million d’habitants.
La Cedeao condamne une “tentative de coup d’état”
La Cedeao, le bloc régional qui promeut la coopération politique et économique en Afrique de l’Ouest, a condamné ce qu’elle appelle une “tentative de coup d’État” en Guinée-Bissau, et exhorte les militaires à regagner leurs casernes.
“La Cedeao suit avec une grande inquiétude l’évolution de la situation en Guinée-Bissau… où des tirs militaires ont lieu autour du palais du gouvernement”, selon Reuters.
“La Cedeao condamne cette tentative de coup d’État et tient les militaires responsables de la sécurité du président Umaro Sissoco Embaló et des membres de son gouvernement.”
Plusieurs coups d’État ont eu lieu en Afrique de l’Ouest au cours des 18 derniers mois, les militaires ayant pris le pouvoir au Mali, en Guinée et au Burkina Faso.
Ces derniers jours, la Cedeao a suspendu un autre de ses membres, le Burkina Faso, où les militaires ont organisé un putsch.
