Les Ukrainiens vivent avec la guerre depuis 2014, lorsque des séparatistes se sont emparés de zones dans l’est du pays et que la Russie a annexé la Crimée.
Récemment, la menace pour le reste du pays a été amplifiée par un renforcement massif des troupes russes aux frontières du pays. Trois Ukrainiens racontent à la BBC comment ils font face à la vie dans l’ombre de la guerre.
“Je développe des programmes de danse pour faire face au stress“
Valentyna Kovach, 36 ans, est une chorégraphe professionnelle qui dirige un studio de danse à Kiev, appelé ValenDance.
Normalement, la fin de l’hiver et le début du printemps sont ses périodes les plus chargées. De nombreux clients viennent la voir pour suivre des cours de mouvement et de bien-être alors que le temps se réchauffe.
Mais cette année est différente – la menace d’une invasion russe a rendu certaines personnes moins enclines à penser à la remise en forme physique et émotionnelle, et elles ont mis en attente les abonnements mensuels pour économiser de l’argent.
Selon Valentina, d’autres personnes pratiquent davantage d’activités physiques pour se déstresser, mais dans l’ensemble, son chiffre d’affaires est en baisse, car le sentiment général est qu’il est plus prudent d’économiser dans des moments comme celui-ci.
De nombreuses personnes affirment que le niveau de tension actuel ne permet pas de planifier plus de quelques semaines à l’avance.
Valentyna a également un plan d’urgence, si le pire se produit et que la capitale ukrainienne est directement attaquée par les Russes.
Ses parents vivent dans l’ouest du pays et s’y installer, à des centaines de kilomètres plus loin de la Russie, serait une option, car une invasion terrestre ou un bombardement aurait peu de chances d’atteindre cette distance.
Mais pour l’instant, elle essaie de rester positive.
“Les cours de danse et les cours corporels aident à libérer l’anxiété”, explique Valentyna.
“Cela nous aide à nous sentir mieux. C’est ce dont mes clients ont besoin aujourd’hui plus que jamais, sous toute cette pression.”
“Je réoriente mon activité”
Ruslan Beliaiev, 45 ans, dirige Dronarium, une entreprise qui fait voler des drones à des fins commerciales, en organisant des spectacles aériens ou en installant des publicités ou des bannières dans des endroits élevés et difficiles à atteindre.
L’un de leurs projets les plus connus a consisté à faire voler un drapeau LGBT à rayures arc-en-ciel au-dessus de la capitale ukrainienne lors des célébrations de la Kiev Pride en juin 2020.
Le drapeau a survolé plusieurs points de repère de Kiev, dont la statue de la patrie, et le coup d’éclat a été largement couvert par les médias ukrainiens.
Travailler avec des clients commerciaux lui rapportait auparavant de bons revenus, mais d’abord avec la pandémie, puis avec la tension accrue autour de l’Ukraine, les affaires se sont effondrées.
Bien qu’il n’ait pas encore du mal à acheter les produits de première nécessité, Ruslan a décidé de chercher d’autres directions pour son entreprise.
Deux de ses employés sont des vétérans de guerre, qui ont participé au conflit dans l’est de l’Ukraine. Ils ont eu une idée.
“Ils ont dit que nous pourrions recalibrer nos drones. Certains drones ont des caméras spéciales, d’autres des imageurs thermiques. Nous pouvons tous les utiliser pour le renseignement”, explique Ruslan.
L’entreprise de Ruslan est en train de mettre en place un projet commun avec la défense territoriale ukrainienne pour commencer à utiliser des drones pour la collecte de renseignements. Cette collaboration lui permettrait de tenir le coup financièrement, mais il a d’autres préoccupations.
Ruslan s’inquiète toujours de l’avenir et de la menace d’une invasion russe et se prépare à envoyer sa femme et ses deux enfants, âgés de sept et onze ans, au loin.
“Je pense qu’il n’est pas sûr de rester à Kiev car elle pourrait être à portée des missiles de la Russie. C’est pourquoi je vais envoyer ma femme et mes enfants chez des proches à l’étranger.”
“Je vais suivre un cours d’études supérieures dans le domaine de la défense”
Natalia Sad a 35 ans et est titulaire d’un diplôme en relations internationales. Elle travaille comme chargée de communication chez le fabricant d’armes de l’État, Ukroboronprom.
Lorsque les tensions ont récemment augmenté, elle a commencé à penser qu’elle aimerait se concentrer encore plus sur la sphère de la défense.
“Je ne peux pas prendre une mitrailleuse, dit-elle, je ne pense pas que je serai d’une grande utilité”.
Mais elle est convaincue que sa formation et son expérience feront d’elle une bonne stratège de la défense, et elle s’est inscrite à l’université de la défense nationale pour obtenir un diplôme de troisième cycle de deux ans.
Elle n’a pas l’intention de quitter son travail pour suivre ce diplôme, mais elle suit les cours le weekend.
Natalya affirme que même si l’invasion n’est pas imminente, la menace russe ne disparaît pas. Elle souhaite que l’industrie ukrainienne de la défense améliore son jeu et devienne plus moderne et mieux équipée.
“La crise actuelle est un défi mondial”, déclare Natalya. “C’est l’intention d’un seul pays de redessiner la carte du monde et nous devons y résister.”
Mais comment la crise actuelle a-t-elle affecté sa vie quotidienne ?
“Je ne fais pas d’économies. Je continue simplement à vivre normalement”, déclare Natalya. “Mes amis se demandent si cela vaut la peine de retirer de l’argent liquide des banques. Je ne le pense pas. Je m’en tiens à mon plan d’épargne pour acheter une voiture. J’ai également l’intention de rénover mon appartement.”
Comme beaucoup d’autres Ukrainiens, Natalya insiste sur la nécessité d’éviter à tout prix la panique.
“En vivant avec cette menace, j’ai réalisé qu’il est important de continuer à vivre sa vie ici et maintenant, en prenant les choses un jour après l’autre.”
