Ils ont laissé tout derrière eux: enfance, famille, amis… et ont débarqué dans des pays lointains que certains de leurs compatriotes désignaient de pays de sauvages. Ils sont venus en missionnaires, en enseignants, en infirmiers… dans la vingtaine, au début de leur vie d’adulte. Aussitôt les valises déposées, ils sont tombés amoureux de leur pays d’accueil et de ses habitants.

On pourrait penser qu’en quittant leur pays c’était « adieu, veau, vache, cochon, couvée » mais ce n’était pas le cas, car ils croyaient retourner dans leur pays une fois leur service de quelques années complété. Mais la plupart du temps ils se sont établis au pays pour de bon, et certains sont devenus des locaux en demandant la nationalité des pays qui les ont accueillis.

Au Rwanda, je vous ai parlé du Père Joseph Fraipont et de Mlle Antonia Locatelli.

Aujourd’hui je vous parlerai de Sœur Dina Martinez alias Nyiranuma de l’Institut séculier Vita et Pax, originaire d’Espagne mais rwandaise dans son cœur.

Tout le monde à Kigali connaît le Centre de santé chez Nyiranuma dans le quartier de Biryogo pour qui Nyiranuma occupait la fonction de Directrice. Elle est devenue célèbre dans les années 1980 lorsque l’épidémie de sida a éclaté au Rwanda et que la population atteinte de cette maladie se trouvait marginalisée.

Nyiranuma a montré beaucoup d’humanité en s’occupant des victimes qui étaient considérées comme des parias de la société rwandaise. C’est à cette époque que la maison de Nyiranuma est devenue très populaire.

Le Centre de santé de Nyiranuma était affilié au Centre hospitalier de Kigali (CHK), mais jouait un rôle de premier plan dans la prise en charge des malades du sida et l’encouragement des gens à s’en occuper.

Chez Nyiranuma, les patients pouvaient être soignés, traités, mais surtout reçus comme des êtres humains dans l’amour fraternel et soignés par des aidants dévoués et déterminés à être proches d’eux.

À part le sida, on recevait chez Nyiranuma des soins contre d’autres maladies chroniques comme la malaria. Ceux qui ne la connaissaient pas pensaient, en entendant ce nom de « Nyiranuma », qu’il s’agissait d’une guérisseuse rwandaise de la médecine traditionnelle. Au départ, ce joli nom ne lui appartenait pas. Il avait été donné à l’une des religieuses qui travaillait dans le centre. Mais celle-ci était si jeune et si sage que les gens l’ont comparé à une colombe et ont commencé à l’appeler Nyiranuma.

Après son départ du Rwanda, les rwandais ont continué à appeler le Centre « chez Nyiranuma ». C’est ainsi que sa Directrice, Sœur Dina Martinez en est venue à se faire appeler Nyiranuma pour de bon.

Après le génocide contre les Tutsis, Nyiranuma est rentrée chez elle en Espagne, mais elle n’a jamais oublié le Rwanda, un pays qu’elle a tant aimé.

Rendons, un hommage bien senti à cet être exceptionnel qui a consacré sa jeunesse et toute sa vie aux marginalisés et aux plus défavorisés de la société rwandaise en s’installant dans le pire bidonville de la ville de Kigali.

Elle vit maintenant à une longue distance du Rwanda, mais avec son nom, son aura ne quittera jamais le Rwanda.

Nyiranuma, une vraie héroïne que les Rwandais n’oublieront jamais.
