À tous ceux qui ont étudié à l’Université Nationale du Rwanda (UNR), campus Ruhande, avant 1994, vous vous rappelez de ce ‘’cri spécial’’ venant de ce qu’on appelait les ‘’salauds’’ (pour les non-initiés, ce n’est pas une insulte). Ce cri m’a toujours fait pleurer de rire, car il venait de nulle part et était lancé sans raison apparente. Lorsque ton regard croisait celui d’un ‘’salaud’’, c’était fini, pas moyen d’y échapper.
C’était un cri sec venant de loin dans les entrailles qui te tombait dessus sans crier gare! Aussitôt sorti, la personne, d’un air amusé, partait sans rien te dire d’autres te laissant abasourdi. Mais, c’était s’il n’y a personne autour, sinon, on te gratifiait d’un concert gratuit de cri, dans la mesure où tu avais les nerfs solides pour le supporter. De ma part, ça m’a toujours amusé et fait rire, à cause de l’absurdité de ce cri.
Quelle ne fût ma joie quand je tombe sur la chanson ‘’urugera’’ de l’orchestre Salus Populi. Je ne comprends aucun mot de cette chanson, absolument rien, mon bonheur à l’écouter se trouve dans ce cri que j’affectionne tant. Pour moi cette chanson est un chef-d’œuvre à cause des mots d’une intelligence qui me dépasse, mais surtout du jeu d’instruments de musique utilisés et évidemment ce cri spécial. Vous l’aurez deviné, en ce Vendredi de gratitude, place au célèbre orchestre Salus Populi des étudiants de l’UNR campus Ruhande.
Le nom de Salus Populi vient de la devise de l’Université Nationale du Rwanda ‘’Illumination et Salus Populi’’. La musique rwandaise de Salus populi est devenue très populaire depuis 1974 popularisée par Munyambuga Deo, Alias Malumba. En arrivant à Ruhande, ce dernier a rencontré Masabo Juvenal Nyangezi, Bigirankana Aloys, Nkurunziza Charles et Karemera Jean-Marie. Salus Populi venait de naître! Ils avaient tous du talent et de l’énergie propulsant, ainsi, l’orchestre Salus Populi dans les annales de l’histoire de la musique rwandaise jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Leurs chansons les plus célèbres sont : Nkumbuye inkogoto, Amazi yacu ya kera, Nakubise umugore wanjye, Urugera, Sindira….
D’autres ont fait partis de cet orchestre sans nécessairement être des étudiants de l’UNR. Il s’agit de Ntawuyirushintege Boniface alias Bonintage qui a fondé l’orchestre Nyampinga et de Mathias, le compositeur de la chanson célèbre ‘’Dawe wa twese’’ qui a fait la renomée de l’orchestre Nyampinga.
L’expression le ‘’bon vieux temps’’ ne veut pas dire qu’on glorifie le passéisme, cela veut dire qu’on a la nostalgie des moment heureux et qu’on les vit même, à l’instant. Et Salus Populi, nous en a donné, des tonnes de moments heureux à en mourir.
Rendons hommage à cet orchestre qui a fait le bonheur de tous les rwandais et la grandeur de l’UNR. Siège du savoir, ses musiciens ne pouvaient être que la crème de la crème de la musique rwandaise en terme du maniement des instruments de musique traditionnels mais aussi à la composition de musique de haut niveau. D’avance, je lève mon chapeau à tous les lecteurs qui pourront nous donner la signification de la chanson ‘’urugera’’, mot par mot.
