Je suis surpris par cet écrit de Olivier Nduhungirehe car je ne peux en aucun cas exploiter la mort de son petit frère non seulement parce que je connaissais Janvier mais aussi parce que la famille de Olivier est très amie avec ma famille. Loin de moi alors d’avoir cette idée d’exploiter sa mort. Pourquoi ? J’ai répondu à la question de Sharangabo qui me demandait le nom du frère d’Olivier c’est tout. Si cela a été interprété comme l’exploitation de la mort de Janvier je m’en excuse énormément.
Par contre, bien que la famille d’Olivier soit amie à ma famille, je ne suis pas d’accord avec le choix qu’Olivier a fait de soutenir le régime dictatorial de Kigali. Le fait que Olivier veut toujours minimiser les tueries, les massacres , les arrestations et emprisonnement du peuple Rwandais par le FPR fait de lui un cible potentiel des colères et énervement des netters sur le forum tellement que certains veulent toujours lui rappeler que même son frère a été tué par le FPR qu’il défend.
Parlant sur la circonstance de la mort de Janvier (tel qu’Olivier l’a raconté) je peux affirmer que mon petit frère Claude a été tué dans les mêmes circonstances à Kacyiru le 13 Avril à 6 du matin. Les nyumbakumi du quartier où nous vivions dans les maisons de la Caisse social à Kacyiru avaient obligé tout le monde à participer dans des rondes de nuits et c’est dans ces circonstances que nous nous sommes retrouvés dehors avec les autres.
C’était un quartier des intellectuels (maisons de Caisse social et Minitrape) et dans les rondes il y avait les tutsi et les hutu ensemble. Malheureusement, bien avant que les nyumbakumi nous ordonnent de participer dans les rondes il y a eu trois familles tuées par les interahamwe (la famille de Michel et Charlotte, la famille da Sano, et une autre famille dont je ne me souviens plus le nom). Ils ont voulu aussi assassiner la famille de Mugabowindekwe et sa femme Catherine heureusement ils se sont cachés chez les voisins avant l’arrivée des interahamwe.
Le 13 Avril 1994, nous finissions nos rondes et nous nous apprêtions à aller dormir quand soudainement nous avons vu beaucoup de militaires du FPR qui allaient à pas de course attaquer la gendarmerie de Kacyiru. Leur chef est resté derrière et s’est approché de nous et nous a demandé de ne pas bouger. Il a répéter qu’il va tirer sur celui qui va bouger. Et tranquillement il a commencé a tiré en visant la tête à bout portant sur chacun de nous. Moi la balle a sifflé au dessus de ma tête et je suis tombé dans les cadavres. Sur 12 personnes présentes, seuls moi et Safari Nyandwi ont eu la vie sauve.
J’étais avec les gens qui habitaient dans le quartier comme Mohamoud Rahamatar, Karangwa, Iréné Kayibanda, Safari Eugène (surnommée Kisedeki), Claude mon petit frère, Kagina le volleyeur et d’autres. Heureusement que d’autres étaient déjà parti le bilan aurait été très lourd. Je citerai notamment parmi ceux qui étaient déjà parti comme l’ancien ambassadeur de Hollande Bizimana Jean Pierre, procureur Mutashya, Ngenzi, Pierre Ntivunwa, etc… En peu de mot, il y’avait les hutu et les tutsi dans cette ronde.
Le militaire qui nous a tiré dessus ne pouvait pas nous confondre avec les interahamwe puisque nous n’avions pas d’armes ni des uniformes des interahamwe ni des cartes d’interahamwe. Les militaires du FPR tuaient toute personne qu’ils rencontraient sur son chemin sans discernement. J’imagine que c’est dans ces circonstances que le jeune Janvier Nduhungirehe est mort. C’est le cas de plusieurs personnes aussi.
Pendant ce temps mon grand frère (adoptif) Félix qui vivait à Nyamirambo a été tué par les interahamwe. Ce que j’ai vu pendant cette période est pire et j’ai eu des cauchemars pendant 15 ans. Malgré cet assassinat de mon frère je ne pouvais me résoudre à suivre le gouvernement des Kambanda et Sindikubwabo à Gitarama vu les atrocités et les tueries des interahamwe qui chassaient les tutsi partout et vu mon implication personnelle aussi dans la parti d’opposition PL que j’ai représenté à l’Université campus de Nyakinama comme vice président dans l’association des étudiants AGEUNR en 1992-1993.
Après, je me suis refugié avec ma famille à l’hôpital Roi Fayçal et plus tard nous sommes allés à Byumba dans la zone du FPR.
En chemin dans la zone du FPR, nous avons rencontré beaucoup de cadavres, certains tués par les interahamwe et d’autres tués par les inkotanyi.
Dans la zone contrôlée par le FPR à Byumba, il suffisait que quelqu’un te pointe du doigt en disant que tu es un interahamwe pour que tu sois exécuté sur le champ. Beaucoup sont morts parce qu’ils étaient originaires du nord ou parce qu’ils étaient membre du MRND ou du MDR POWER. C’est le cas de Muhaturukundo et sa famille, de Kayinamura et sa fille Oda, de Baliyanga Alfred, Alphonse le mari de Jacqueline Sebukangaga, etc…
Puisque les jeunes étaient enrôlés de force dans les rangs du FPR dans cette zone, j’ai juré que je ne deviendrai jamais militaire si pour être militaire équivaut à assassiner les gens. Heureusement j’ai pu obtenir le fameux KIBALI pour quitter Byumba, avec l’aide d’un jeune ami que nous avons grandi ensemble à Nyamirambo, pour aller à Kampala vers mi-mai 1994.
Vu les atrocités et le génocide commis par les interahamwe en tuant les tutsi et les hutus de l’opposition ou issus de famille mixte, et vu les atrocités du FPR qui tuaient sans discernement sur la population, je me suis résolu à cet instant à combattre tous le criminels de tous bords.
Le peuple Rwandais mérite la justice.

Kacyiru: Le 13 Avril 1994 Date fatidique
Le genocide contre les Tutsi au Rwanda a été d’une atrocité inimaginable et inconcevable pour l’intelligence humaine. Hommes, femmes, enfants, bébés et vieillards ont tous été tués sans discernement parce qu’ils sont nés Tutsi. Survivre durant cette période n’était pas du tout évident pour un Tutsi ou pour un Hutu opposant du régime de Habyarimana.
L’histoire de notre quartier de Kacyiru ( Kigali) sort de l’ordinaire c’est pourquoi ça vaut la peine de la raconter comme un témoignage historique. Les Interahamwe sévissaient partout au pays et faisaient une chasse au Tutsi partout au Rwanda. Kacyiru ne faisait pas exception à la règle.
Pour notre quartier de Kacyiru (maisons de la Caisse Sociale), la décision de contrecarrer les interahamwe aura été une arme à double tranchant quoique beaucoup des gens ont eu la vie sauve grâce à cette stratégie.
D’un côté le fait de se regrouper en solidarité ensemble tous dehors ( Hutu et Tutsi) nous a permis d’empêcher les Interahamwe d’entrer dans chaque maison pour massacrer surtout les familles des Tutsi visés. En effet, du 9 Avril au 13 Avril 1994 il n’y a pas eu d’assassinat dans notre quartier malgré les attaques incessantes et quotidiennes d’Interahamwe.
D’aucuns qualifieront à tort notre regroupement désespéré à une barrière mais en réalité c’était un rassemblement des gens terrifiés qui ont peur d’être la cible des Interahamwe et qui se sont regroupés pour survivre ensemble entre Hutu et Tutsi contre les attaques d’Interahamwe. Notre quartier regroupait majoritairement des intellectuels. Nos voisins du MRND n’osaient pas venir te tuer en personne.
Pour un rappel: Connaissez-vous une barrière en Avril 94 au Rwanda qui n’avait pas d’armes, ni d’arrestations ni de morts ni demande d’identité ?? A Kacyiru ( dans les maisons de la Caisse Sociale) Disons que c’était plutôt un regroupement des gens terrifiés qui se se sont mis ensemble pour essayer de survivre.
A chaque fois que les Interahamwe déployaient une attaque, ils nous voyaient tous Hutu et Tutsi ensemble dehors et ils n’ont jamais réussi à nous séparer. Cette solidarité a pu sauver beaucoup de vies durant cette courte période difficile.
Je me souviens quand les Interahamwe sont venus attaquer Mohamoud Rahamatali le 8 Avril. Nous avons tous pris sa défense et après une heure de négociation sous la menace, les Interahamwe ont fini par accepter qu’on choisissent une équipe de 5 personnes des sages dans notre groupe pour accompagner les 5 chefs d’Interahamwe pour aller fouiller sa maison.
Ils sont allés fouiller sa maison accompagné de nos 5 sages et nous avons tous retenu notre souffle. Après 30 minutes, ils sont revenus avec Mohamoud en disant qu’ils n’ont rien trouvé. Mohamoud et sa famille venaient de l’échapper belle.
Nous avons continué à nous regrouper ensemble Hutu et Tutsi jusqu’aux matin fatidique du 13 Avril 1994 lorsque l’armée du FPR qui venant du CND nous a pris pour cible.Notre stratégie de contrecarrer les Interahamwe a connu une fin tragique.
On était une vingtaine de personnes Hutu et Tutsi ensemble ( heureusement 8 personnes venaient de quitter pour aller dormir) et le militaire qui nous a tiré dessus ne nous a pas posé aucune question.
Il a juste dit ne bougez pas !! Je vais tirer sur celui qui bouge !!! Puis il a commencé à tirer sur chacun de nous a bout portant. Il visait la tête. Moi aussi il m’a tiré dessus mais la balle a sifflé au dessus de ma tête et je suis tombé dans les cadavres. Mon petit frère Rene-Claude n’a pas survécu ainsi que d’autres personnes présentes. Il n’ y a que moi et Safari qui ont pu échappé miraculeusement au fatidique 13 Avril 1994.
Des cauchemars quotidiens entrain de fuir quelqu’un qui me tire dessus a été mon quotidien durant plusieurs années. Se réveiller au milieu de la nuit haletant, essoufflé en transpirant ne m’a tout de même pas convaincu d’aller voir un psychologue jusqu’aujourd’hui.
Une chance que j’ai assisté une fois à une prière de guérison. Ça m’a aidé beaucoup à surmonter cette épreuve.
R.I.P. Rene-Claude, Mohamoud Rahamatali, Kagina Valens, Karangwa, Eugène ( surnommé Kisedeki), Irenee Kayibanda, et autres que je n’ai pas retenu les noms. Que Dieu vous accueille tous au ciel.
Post Scriptum:Au fait pourquoi on a décidé de se regrouper ensemble dehors ?
Non seulement c’était les ordres de Nyumbakumi qui obligeait tous les hommes adultes de sortir dehors mais aussi l’assassinat commis par les Interahamwe sur les deux familles dans notre quartier a influencé beaucoup notre décision.La famille de Michel et Charlotte ( tué par Thomas umuzamu wo muri Centre sportif) ainsi que la famille de Sano ( lui il a survécu car il a pu se cacher chez les voisins).
Horrifiés par l’assassinat de nos 2 voisins, nous avons décidé de nous regrouper rapidement tous ensemble dehors Hutu et Tutsi. Évidemment les dignitaires du MRND se la coulaient douce dans leurs maisons.
Parmi d’autres familles visées dans notre quartier, il y’avait aussi Mugabowindekwe et Catherine qui ont pu se cacher et ont eu la vie sauve mais leurs enfants qui étaient en vacances à Gitarama n’ont pas survécu.
Quelque jours après, nous sommes allés à l’hôpital Faycal et par après nous avons continuer à Byumba dans la zone du FPR jusqu’à la fin du genocide des Tutsi après la prise de Kigali le 4 Juillet 1994.
Je salue le courage des gens Hutu et Tutsi qui ont accepté de confronter les Interahamwe dans le moments difficiles. Je citerai Mutashya le procureur, Ngenzi, Jean Pierre Bizimana ex-minister, Nsengimana Etienne ancien President des Scouts, Ntivunwa Pierre cadre Caisse Sociale du Rwanda, Mohamoud Rahamatali, Twagirumukiza Joseph cadre Caisse Sociale du Rwanda, Kayibanda Irenee, Nzaramba Rene-Claude, Safari Kisedeki, Kagina Valens, Karangwa, Safari Nyandwi, Ndengera Patrick, etc.
Malheureusement ça a été une fin tragique pour la plupart dans cette équipe quoique ils ont été le bouclier pour beaucoup d’autres. Nous sommes les survivants de cette aventure et c’est notre devoir d’immortaliser ce processus peu ordinaire dans l’épisode du genocide contre les Tutsi.
Et que dire sur le militaire du FPR qui a ouvert le feu sur nous? J’aimerais le rencontrer et lui parler. Et éventuellement lui pardonner car c’est ce que Dieu nous demande de faire.
Que dire de Simon de Kacyiru ( le petit frère de François Habiyakare ex-Minister et Bralirwa Boss). Il nous a aidé beaucoup car toutes nos familles étaient entassées chez lui. Il nous a donné la protection et la nourriture gratuitement. Un grand homme. On m’a dit qu’il est mort récemment. Que Dieu ait son âme.
