In 1954, the General Assembly recommended that all countries establish a "Universal Children's Day", which would be a day of worldwide brotherhood and understanding among children, and of activities promoting the well-being of children throughout the world. It proposed to Governments that the Day should be celebrated on a date that they considered most appropriate. November 20 was chosen, the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959
On November 20, 1989, the United Nations unanimously adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child: the rights of every child in the world were now recognized by an international treaty, ratified by 197 states. Since then, 20 November has been declared International Children's Rights Day – a milestone that UNICEF celebrates every year.
