In 2018 we launched the Altiplano Ultimate Concept a 2mm thick watch the exact same thickness as the original 9P movement except link now it is the whole watch which is 2mm thin … Developing such a complex watch required many skills and resources. Among the three models released last year this one was my immediate favorite with its warm and versatile color palette of brown accented with gold. This watch is powered by the automatic L844 movement which beats at 25200 vph and is equipped with a 72-hour power reserve.
In addition to a self-starting detent tourbillon the watch has a moonphase and zero-reset hack seconds which resets the seconds to 12 o’clock when the crown is pulled out allowing precision time-setting.
Aside from the considerable complexity and tolerances of the Orb’s structure its multi-positional nature meant link that L’Epée needed to design a striking mechanism that doesn’t rely on gravity as is the case for most chiming clock mechanisms that use a bell. For Orb L’Epée fitted the striking mechanism with a series of springs to help power the strike regardless of how the clock is oriented.
La Grande Classique de Longines is effortless clean and resoundingly legible. This watch reminds me in a good way of a blank sheet of paper with a brand-new black pen sitting on top of it. Just as you can fill that paper with whatever you want someone who straps on this watch feels that their day could go anywhere and could probably succeed in clearing their head every time they looked at it.
I asked link Oris to loan me an example with the hopes of getting a better understanding of what the full bronze package felt like in person and I wanted to see what it would look like with some patina. Thankfully Oris had a loaner and it had not been cleaned up so what you see here is an example of the early patina that develops as the watch interacts with the atmosphere around it.

Cs get degrees. And the point of this exercise – both this specific class in Chicago and my newbie project, overall – was never to become a master watchmaker. It was to explore how a layperson could, with a little curiosity, gain enough basic knowledge to fall in love with watches. By that standard, the whole endeavor has been a spectacular success.
As far as we understand, AP (represented by Balestra) was the underbidder and did not win the Gerald Genta Royal Oak at Sotheby’s, it instead went to a phone bidder represented by Tom Heap of the Sotheby’s office in London. Though, to be fair, AP won at least three important watches that can now be used to fill the company’s incredible new Bjarke Ingels-designed museum in Le Brassus.
I appreciate watch brands that take a chance in their designs to craft something functional link yet totally out of the box. Modern watches often feel overly safe and can lack any sense of playfulness, so there is really something to be said about these colorful, quirky tool watches from the 1960s and 1970s that capture the imagination.
