Des dizaines de pompiers continuent à lutter, ce lundi soir, contre les flammes qui s’attaquent désormais principalement à l’Assemblée nationale du pays, un bâtiment déjà bien endommagé, depuis le début du sinistre qui s’est déclaré très tôt, dimanche matin.

Le sinistre n’a pas fait de victimes et lors d’une conférence de presse, un peu plus tôt dans la journée de ce lundi, les autorités avaient annoncé que l’incendie était sous contrôle. Pourtant, une demi-heure plus tard, un grand panache de fumée noire s’échappait à nouveau de la toiture et des fenêtres de l’Assemblée nationale.
L’odeur de l’incendie est encore présente dans les rues du centre-ville et une trentaine de pompiers tentaient toujours, ce lundi soir, depuis une grue, de calmer les flammes que l’on peut apercevoir en train de grignoter le haut du bâtiment.
Le vent qui soufflait a pu attiser les braises, selon un représentant de la ville du Cap, et les températures encore très élevées à l’intérieur, avoisinant les 100°, auraient pu permettre une reprise du feu.
Pour l’instant, les autorités se gardent bien de se prononcer sur l’origine de l’incendie, débuté dimanche, et appellent les Sud-Africains à ne pas relayer les théories du complot qui spéculent sur ce qui a pu le provoquer. La police a néanmoins confirmé l’arrestation d’un homme de 49 ans, poursuivi pour « effraction, vol et incendie criminel ». Il doit être présenté à un juge dans la journée de mardi.

La Chambre basse de l’Assemblée nationale est complètement ravagée et des parties du toit se sont effondrées. L’institution a toutefois indiqué que le discours du président devant le Parlement qui marque la rentrée pour les députés sera, quant à lui, bien maintenu dans un lieu à déterminer.
Une partie des bâtiments victoriens, les plus anciens, ont aussi été endommagés par les flemmes. À la mi-journée toutefois, les autorités avaient annoncé que la Chambre haute du Parlement ainsi que la bibliothèque des lieux et une tapisserie historique n’avaient pas été touchées.
Les premiers rapports donnant une idée un peu plus précise de l’étendue des dégâts devraient être remis, vendredi, mais des questions restent aussi en suspens comme le dysfonctionnement des dispositifs anti-incendie avec une fermeture de l’arrivée d’eau du système d’arrosage automatique.
