With Waldan International Oscar drew on reliable supplied movements including the El Primeros he’d secured years earlier and cased them up in heavy gold and platinum for what amounted to a reasonable value proposition even in 1990s dollars. “In the ’90s and even into the very very early 2000s a Waldan with an El Primero in a yellow-gold case would probably run you around 5000” Andrew told me. “In platinum it might be 8000.”

The star of the show, however, is the guilloche dial. Every dial is made by one man, Master Chen, and it takes eight hours to produce a single dial. The dial colors offered on the Perception are grey, salmon, and ice blue, and each of them is hand-turned on a rose engine that Master Chen fashioned himself. He even holds a patent in China for his rose engine design.

So is link the Khaki Field Mechanical the end-all, be-all when it comes to field watches? In the era of rough-and-tumble G-Shocks and Garmins, can a simple, time-only mechanical watch really be the best and most practical tool for the job? Released by Namco Arcades in May of 1980, Pac-Man is one of the most recognizable video games ever made, and Casio recently announced a Pac-Man edition of their new re-issue of their F-100. Earlier this week, Bremont announced the next generation of the Supermarine S302, with new colorways and a new format for the GMT function. Still operating as the travel version of the brand’s somewhat smaller take on its longstanding Supermarine line, the 2023 S302 is being offered in a trio of versions, including a very grey limited edition model.
That’s when I started really paying attention to watches. When you work in a dining room, you begin to see everything that’s out there. And, to be honest, you begin to understand people better through that lens. It’s not a foolproof science but what started off as simply intuiting their budget for a link meal or wine eventually grew to a sense of who someone is, or who they aspire to be, simply based on what’s on their wrist.
