La Bible ne dit pas quand Dieu a commencé à créer l’univers, ni combien de temps cela lui a pris.

Elle dit simplement : « Au commencement, Dieu créa le ciel et la terre » (Genèse 1:1). La Bible ne précise pas quand le « commencement » a eu lieu.

Par contre, l’ordre des évènements rapporté dans la Genèse le situe avant les six périodes, ou « jours », de création.

 Les six jours de création ont-​ils été des jours de 24 heures ?

Non. Dans la Bible, le mot « jour » peut désigner différentes durées, en fonction du contexte. Par exemple, en Genèse 2:4, la période de création tout entière est décrite comme un seul jour.

Que s’est-​il passé pendant les six jours de création ?

Dieu a transformé la terre « informe et déserte » en planète habitable (Genèse 1:2). Puis il a créé la vie sur la terre. La Bible décrit six séries d’évènements qui ont eu lieu pendant les jours, ou périodes, de création :

  • 1er jour : Dieu a fait que la lumière atteigne la surface de la terre, ce qui a produit le cycle du jour et de la nuit (Genèse 1:3-5).
  • 2e jour : Dieu a formé une étendue, c’est-à-dire une séparation entre l’eau qui était sur la surface terrestre et l’eau qui était en suspension au-dessus de la surface terrestre (Genèse 1:6-8).
  • 3e jour : Dieu a fait apparaître la terre ferme. Il a aussi créé la végétation (Genèse 1:9-13).
  • 4e jour : Dieu a fait que le soleil, la lune et les étoiles soient visibles depuis la terre et servent de luminaires qui l’éclairent (Genèse 1:14-19, note).
  • 5e jour : Dieu a créé la vie aquatique et les animaux volants (Genèse 1:20-23).
  • 6e jour : Dieu a créé les animaux terrestres et les humains (Genèse 1:24-31).

Après la fin du sixième jour, Dieu s’est reposé de son œuvre, autrement dit il a cessé de créer (Genèse 2:1, 2).

 

Le récit de la Genèse est-​il scientifiquement exact ?

Le récit biblique de la création du monde n’a pas la prétention d’être une analyse scientifique détaillée. Il décrit plutôt la création d’une façon telle que même les lecteurs des temps bibliques pouvaient comprendre l’ordre schématique des évènements. Le récit de la création n’est pas en contradiction avec les faits scientifiques.

L’astrophysicien Robert Jastrow a écrit : « Si l’astronomie et la Genèse se contredisent sur des détails, elles s’accordent en revanche sur l’essentiel : La chaîne des événements qui aboutit à l’homme commence de façon brusque, à un moment bien précis. »

Quand le soleil, la lune et les étoiles ont-​ils été créés ?

Le soleil, la lune et les étoiles existaient déjà dans « le ciel » créé « au commencement » (Genèse 1:1).

Mais probablement que leur lumière n’atteignait pas la surface de la terre parce que l’atmosphère autour de la terre était très épaisse (Genèse 1:2). Donc, même si une lumière floue est devenue visible le premier jour, il n’était pas encore possible de voir d’où elle venait. Apparemment, le quatrième jour, l’atmosphère s’est éclaircie. La Bible dit que le soleil, la lune et les étoiles ont commencé à « éclairer la terre ». Cette expression décrit sans doute comment la lumière était perçue depuis la terre (Genèse 1:17).

Selon la Bible, quel est l’âge de la terre ?

La Bible ne dit rien au sujet de l’âge de la terre. Genèse 1:1 dit simplement que l’univers physique, dont la terre, a eu un commencement.
